Who We Are
The Greater Lansing Homeless Resolution Network is a consortium of homeless service providers and concerned individuals in the Lansing area dedicated to finding and fighting the causes of homelessness. In order to meet this goal, the Network has developed a Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness which gives the community common purpose, direction, and realization of those goals.

The Challenge
Homelessness has been a significant problem in the Greater Lansing area for many years. In the calendar year 2006, 3220 different individuals were served by area agencies that provide services to homeless individuals and families, 56.2% of which were women or children. The problems of poverty and homelessness cannot be solved by any single individual or organization. However, ending homelessness is an achievable goal through well-planned, sustained, long term effort with all partners working together towards this common goal.

The Power of Community Action
We have learned that the most effective and efficient way to address complex and challenging issues is to integrate them into existing structures and processes. Thus, we have not created a separate entity to carry out our plan to end homelessness; rather we have built on the accomplishments of the local Continuum of Care and other existing community work. This encourages an important sense of shared responsibility for those who are homeless and fosters a strong commitment to ending homelessness in the community itself.

  Realizing Our Goals
Although the Ten-Year Plan has only been effective for two years, the Network has already won national praise and reached several targets. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) named the Capital area Ten-Year Plan as “one of the top two in the country” and calls it a “comprehensive, visionary, realistic continuum of care plan.”

Our Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) has also won national praise, which allows us to gather and analyze data about homeless individuals while safeguarding their privacy. This allows us to better understand who is homeless and why, leading to specific services that effectively address the needs of the local homeless population.

Another success of the Network is the Cold Weather Plan. This is an emergency plan that shelters the homeless when weather conditions are so cold that they become dangerous. The objective was that 100% of homeless persons would be sheltered from the extreme cold through the coordination of transportation services, day shelters, kitchens, and over-night shelters. This objective was met, and the homeless population had access to shelter and warming stations throughout a very cold winter.
