EMERGENCY PHASE:

The HDO members distributed food, clothing and tents and enabled access to medical care around Ampara costal zone, Batticaloa and then into the entire central zone of the East Districts, Galle & Thangole.
In January 2005 a french medical team partner of HDO have treated more than 2500 people in Eastern province.

Human Development Organization started the net working and implements relief activities with the following organizations:

  • Graduates' Association & University Students - Batticaloa region,
  • Journalists Society & University Teachers - Ampara region
  • Human Power Foundation, - Galle region
  • IMADR, Colombo
  • Citizen's Watch- Plantation Areas

RECONSTRUCTION AND REHABILITATION:

  • Reconstruction

With the funding of CCFD France, DCA Denmark, and Cordaid Netherlands, Foundation de France, Group Development, France, French Embassy & CNOSF 300 temporally houses have already been built, 10 Pre-School are functioning with 450 children and 700 children are studying in the newly constructed temporary building for the Karaitivu Central College. We have also built an temporarly hospital for the children of Karaithivu.

  • Mobilization and coordination

HDO is setting up aid and rehabilitation action monitor groups in coordination with the Sri Lankan government and International NGO.

HDO established the Karaitivu People's Development Forum. This forum is composed by fishermen, women, school teachers, medical practitioners and Divisional Secretary and staff who plan and monitor rehabilitation activities.

It also supports groups to set up: 50 women's groups were formed, made up with around 500 members. The main objective of these groups is the empowerment of their members through fights for their rights and for their economic improvement. Teacher groups, Youth groups and fishermen groups were also set up.

The organization carries out advocacy and lobbying activities. The 27th of August 2005, HDO organized with IMADR (International Movement Against all form of Discrimination and Racism) the Tsunami People's Tribunal. Local and International NGOs and government and media representatives participated (around 350 persons participated).
We also lobby at UN level in Geneva during the year 2006-2007 and HDO is still working to build peace in Sri Lanka.
We also published an IDPs principles guidelines distributed among local authority and NGO (1000 BOOKS)

  • Housing project
Thanks to our french partners we have built 64 housesfor 64 families in Karaithivu. These permanent houses have been built by local workers and with the fully support of the beneficiaries. Because of these houses more than 250 are now living in a safety place. But many people in Karaithivu and in Eastern Province still do not have house and are still living in temporarly shelter.

  • Improvement of living conditions

More than 1000 women were provided support (micro grant and micro credit) for Livelihood Activities /self-employment as small business, cow & poultry ranching, food making, tailoring (through training), fish marketing selling etc. Through this 50 groups we are promoting saving. These women have created the Women Livelihood Development Forum and are now plan to support especially widows(because of tsunami and conflict) other women from other area
.

HDO provided economic support to fishermen repairing 20 boats and building fishermen groups. 10 engine boats and 20 seacane boats are also going to be provided.

An education program about organic farming has been implemented. It concerns 250 farmers and children.

  • Access to education and psychological programs

HDO have build 2 daycares centers and making 10 pre schools operational. 24 teachers have been recruited and school furniture has been provided (books, chairs, pens, bags etc.). Around 350 children have now access to educational and leisure activities. We also started Educational Support Classes for affected children in 5 Schools in Karathevu, Maligaikadu, Kalmunai for GCE O/L Students from August 2006.

HDO is very concerned about psychological trauma. The organization is carrying out social and cultural programs. It provides extra curricular activities to children and every week, 2-days psycho-socio and health education programs are organized. Around 200 persons beneficiate for such a program.

OUR NEW CHALLENGES:

Now in Karaitivu Division there is still many families without any roof for protect them. We planned to build 50 houses and we are still looking for any kind of support.

With the gained experience of rehabilitation activities previously carried out (our temporary shelters and our houses were recognized for their quality and solidity by both the DS and the population) and with the request of the Divisional Secretary, we are planning to implement a new Permanent Housing project.

We plan to resettle the 50 families living in the 2 HDO camps in a first step and then to resettle 10 families living in individual temporary shelters.

We will be really grateful for your cooperation and support for such a project. Please, feel free to contact us if you are interested in a partnership!

Through our activities we have extend our support to population who have not been affected by the Tsunami but by the conflict since more than 20 years. These populations located in the village of Malwatta and Vallatapithy do not receive any help and support for their development.
However they are living in poverty and need our support. We plan to implement an IDPs Empowerment project from October 2007. Once again any help are welcome and you are invited to contact us for more informations.
