This month, we'll have a word from the Post Adjutant:

Have You Ever Wondered Where Your $45.00 Dues Go?
by Greg Kowatch-Post Adjutant

As the Post Adjutant Iíve been asked this question on more than one occasion. So I thought Iíd do a bit of research and let the membership know how this works.

First of all, the Post only gets to retain $12.00 out of every $45.00 dues payment. When you think about it, $12 dollars really isnít that much.

We use these funds towards charitable contributions, paying for the early bird dinners for our members (who pay their dues early), and for miscellaneous office expenses we incur in regards to processing the memberships. The remaining $33.00 is sent to Department with the transmittals.

Now one would think the Department of Alaska is coming out in this deal, but again, they only get to keep a portion of those funds for their use. Department in-turn has to pay National for per capita expenses for each of the Department members; it has to pay a per capita expense to the districts (Western & South East) for each of those members, and also fund for the Legionnaire Newspaper that comes out on a monthly basis. The Department Headquarters has numerous other expenses to include Child Welfare support, building upkeep, payroll, travel expenses, office supplies, etc. So when you think about it, that $33.00 dollars gets split up more ways than you can imagine. So no one organization is really making a fortune here.

One thing in my research I found is that all levels of the American Legion are doing their best to ensure your dues money is being spent wisely. So the next time youíre standing in line for a Post function and wonder why we have to charge fees to cover those function expenses, and you hear someone ask the question: What is my $45.00 annual dues going towards? Ė youíll know how respond. ****************************************************************

From the Desk of the former Post Historian
by Scott Hardon

One of the key responsibilities of the Post Historian is work closely with the Post Adjutant. Iíve learned quite a bit over the past few months, one being that our Post membership records are somewhat lacking. Iím sure at one time all of the DD Form 214s and/or appropriate paperwork were on file. However, over the past several years several of the records have gone missing. Iím attempting to assist our very busy Adjutant in getting these records back on track.

Weíve updated the database and have identified all of our members weíre missing paperwork on. The Adjutant and I are handling this as the renewal membership payments come in. If the database reflects weíre missing your paperwork, you will receive a request for information form back with your new membership card. Please take the time to fill this form out and also provide to us a copy of your DD Form 214 and/or appropriate paperwork. Your cooperation in this endeavor will be greatly appreciated. We do wish to thank all of those members who have already responded to our request.
