April Meeting

Tapping into Talent: Best Practices in Hiring, Accommodating and Retaining People with Disabilities Introduction

Patty Hickock, SPHR, GPHR

Recertification Credit Hours Pending

Place:
Wayland Baptist University
1590 E. Financial Dr., Suite F105
Wasilla, AK 99654

Date: April 11, 2012
Time: 8:00 - 9:30 a.m

In the coming years, there will be approximately 10 million more jobs to fill than there are people to fill them. Employer hiring practices will move from merely maintaining a skilled workforce to active recruiting and training of new employees, often from non-traditional sources.

Employers will be challenged to ensure loyalty in their workforce, and the younger generation of workers will change jobs more frequently than the older workers they are replacing. In this atmosphere, people with disabilities will become a valuable resource for employers. This seven-module program will provide an overview of the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.

Patty is the Director of the Alaska SHRM State Council. She has been involved with SHRM since 2001, and has served as President of the UAA Student Chapter and of the Anchorage Chapter. Patty holds four degrees from the University of Alaska Anchorage, including an MBA.

Patty is the Director of HR Process Improvement at NANA Development Corporation and an Adjunct Professor at Alaska Pacific University. Prior to that she was the Director of HR at Chenega Corporation, where she had a wide range of responsibilities including compliance, Affirmative Action, Employee Relations, Training and Development, Shareholder Employment, Workers’ Compensation, etc.

Patty serves on several other professional and community boards: Alaska SHRM Representative on the Northwest HR Management Association Board and the SHRM Pacific West Council, President of her Homeowner’s Association, VP of Public Relations for the Untwisted Tongues Toastmasters Club and volunteers as social media co-chair for Friends of Pets. Patty is originally from Mazatlán, México and has lived in Alaska since 1995.
