Unity

I dreamed I stood in a studio;
And I watched two sculptors there.

The clay they used was a young child's mind,
And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher, the tools she used were books and music and art.

One was a parent with a guiding hand, and a gentle loving heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled,
With touch that was deft and sure,

While the parent labored by her side,
And polished and smoothed it over.

And when at last their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought.

For the things they had molded into the child could neither be sold nor bought.

And each agreed they would have failed
If they had worked alone.

For behind the parent stood the school,
And behind the teacher the home.

PTO Update

KSE Kids Photo Wall - The kids have loved sharing photos of their summer vacations. We’re going to continue our KSE Kids Photo Wall. November will feature family pets, December - favorite winter photos, and January will be baby pictures.

Upcoming School Beautification Day

Parents with children in the Yellow Building, please keep an eye out for an announcement of our workday for your building.

This is a wonderful way for our Kitty Stone family to work together and help spruce up the school and for our students to take pride in how their school looks. If you would like to be involved, please contact Donna Gibson, PTO Volunteer Coordinator, at 782-9365.

PTO Volunteer Database - The database has been finalized and distributed to teachers and staff to directly contact parents for help at school. For PTO activities, parents will be contacted by Donna Gibson, our Volunteer Coordinator, or another member of the PTO Executive Committee.

If you have volunteered, but have not been contacted yet, please be patient with us. Our goal is for every parent who wants to be involved at Kitty Stone to have an opportunity to help this year. The response from families was overwhelming, the largest response we’ve had in several years.

Thank you to everyone who is taking an active role in contributing to our school. If you would like to help, but have not had time to fill out your form, it’s not too late. We’ll be glad to share another form with you. Let your child’s teacher know, or email us at kittystonepto@bellsouth.net. <

PTO Meeting - We will not have a PTO Board meeting in December. Please join us January 13 for our next meeting.

Box Tops & Labels - We’re moving quickly toward meeting our goal of $2850 by February 28. Our annual snowball fight kicks off November 19. Save your box tops. They're the kids' best chance to throw a snowball in Alabama. Please continue to send box tops and labels. Your trash is cash for our school!

Did you know there are hundreds of stores that will donate a percentage of your total online shopping purchases to our Boxtops For Education Account? Sign up for free at http://www.boxtops4education.com/Marketplace/Default.aspx and feel even better about shopping online by earning cash for our school!

Update on Megan Brittain and How KSE Families Can Help
Megan Brittain is a 6th grader at Kitty Stone and has battled Rhabdomyosarcoma for over 16 months. On October 29, the Brittain family found out that Megan has another tumor in the same region of her spinal cord.   She has undergone months of extensive chemotherapy already and will start a new treatment this month. The Kitty Stone community has some wonderful opportunities coming up to support Megan, her dad, Gary, and her brothers, Ian and Bradley.

Encouragement - Megan keeps everyone updated on her journey through her Caring Bridge site - http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/meganbrittain. Please sign her guestbook. An encouraging word can do so much to brighten someone’s day. Write a note of encouragement and visit her site often. You can also subscribe to receive journal updates.

Travel Expenses - Megan goes to Children’s Hospital for her treatments and other appointments. As you can imagine, travel expenses for the numerous trips to Birmingham can be overwhelming. A fund is being set up for people in the community to make a donation to help out with gas, meals, and other expenses.

Meals - Several parents have expressed interest in providing meals for the family. If you are interested in supporting Megan and her family by either providing a meal or making a donation toward their travel expenses, please email the PTO at kittystonepto@bellsouth.net. We’ll put you in touch with the right people and/or sources to help the Brittains.

Red Cross Blood Drive - The PTO will be sponsoring a blood drive in Megan’s honor January 16, 2009. Please keep an eye out for details. We would love to see an outstanding response from the Kitty Stone family, not only for Megan, but for all of the children receiving support from Red Cross blood drives.
