Is this you first bird purchase?  Our "Feathered Friends" make great companions; they are loving, comical, intelligent creatures. Since you acquired an interest in birds or a bird as a pet, you will want to learn as much as possible about your new friends so he/she will live a long, happy life as your family's companion. This can not tell you all you want to know about your pet, but I hope it helps to get you started in the right direction. Owning a bird for a pet is having a two-year old child in your life forever. They like to chew. It is part of their natural environment. So to discourage them from chewing those things you don't want them to chew, give them objects that they can chew. The purpose of a toy is not to last a long time, it is to entertain your pet.

Did you know birds are not just seed eaters?
Most birds eat a variety of things including fruits, vegetables, pasta, breads. But be careful! Don't let you bird become a junk food junkie. Your bird will be healthier and happier if his diet is healthy. Birds can eat almost anything that you eat with a few exceptions. DO NOT GIVE YOUR BIRD CHOCOLATE, CAFFEINE, AVOCADO OR TOBACCO OF ANY KIND. IT CAN KILL THEM!!!!!!!!!
  HOUSING
Buy as large a cage for your bird as yu can afford. A bird should have enough room to flap his wings for exercise without hitting them on the bars or toys. But be sure the bar spacing is correct. You don't want him/her to stick his/her head through the bars and get it stuck. The place where you purchase your bird should be able to help you with bar spacing. There will be several vendors at the birdfair at Abba Temple Shrine in Mobile, Alabama on July 24 & 25, 2010 with cages of all prices and descriptions, to help you find the one that suits your companions needs.

HEALTH CARE
Please find an AVIAN Vet. Not all veterinarieans know how to care for birds. Ask you vet if he/she is experienced in bird care, is a member of AAV, has attended Association of Avian Veterinarieans seminars and classes, studied under a documented Avian Veterian. Have your bird's health checked as soon as you can after purchase. A complete workup by your Vet will assure there are no hidden problems and will give him/her a place to start if the bird should become ill in the future. Observe your bird closely, and get to know his normal routine and actions so that if there is a change you can take your bird to the Vet before it is too late. Become familiar with what normal bird poop looks like as this is usually the first clue to a birds good health.
  SAFETY CONCERNS
Nonstick cookware and some electric heaters when overheated give off fumes which are deadly to birds. Ideally these products should not be used in homes with birds(if it will kill a bird, it can't be healthy for humans either), but if they are used extreme caution should be the rule and not the exception. There are a variety of plants that are safe around your pet, but there are also many that are poisonous. If you use tree branches for your bird perches be sure they were not sprayed with bug killers. Scrub them in diluted Clorox, rinse them well and dry thoroughly, or wash and bake them in the oven at 300-350* for 30 minutes, then let them cool before plcing them in the cage. Scented candles, room fresheners, sprays, carpet fresheners, bug sprays and perfumes can also cause problems for our "Feathered Friends" respiratory systems.

TOYS AND INFORMATION
Toys are very important to keep your bird active and happy. Be sure to buy toys that are appropriate for the bird. Don't buy small plastic toys for a large bird. They break and pieces of plastic could cut and cause serious problems. Make sure weighted toys do not contain lead, lead is lethal to a bird. Buy closed link chains when possible on your toys. Birds get beaks, toes, or bands caught in open links, then a trip to the Vet will be required to have the toy removed. Libraries, bird fairs and pet stores are good sources of books which will give you good information for your specific type of bird. Use the internet as well. There are several magazines will good bird information. If you have questions please ask your Vet, your avian pet store.
