YARN COLOR GUIDE

SLIPPERS can be done in any color or color combination, always with doubled yarn (2 strands). Please try to stay away from totally light colored pairs. If you have a light color yarn, pair it with a dark color for a tweed effect. The toe and cuff can be done in one color with the body in another. Be creative! These are allowed to be very colorful, and will certainly brighten a soldier's day!

All other patterns (WRISTLETS, HATS, HEADBANDS, DICKEYS) are single strand items, and are to be made in these colors:

For land forces:

  • Medium to dark sage green;
  • medium tan;
  • gray;
  • black;
  • Bernat’s camouflage line -- Outback #10481, Mash #10482 and Desert Sand #10486.

    Through research using a swatch of fabric of the new combat uniform, a NC Operation Toasty Toes committee found the following yarn also suitable:

  • Coats & Clark TLC Heathers #2445, Smoke Green (Please note: this yarn does not crochet well)

For the Navy, it’s ALL BLACK. The watch cap is the classic black cap with a cuff, see patterns for info.

For items worn near the face, please use the softest yarn you can find. Red Heart brand is reported to be too scratchy for the helmets; Caron's "Simply Soft" brand is a good substitute.

for taking the time to help make our deployed troops more comfortable
while they are far from home, serving our country.
Your efforts are greatly appreciated!
