Happy
Thanksgiving!

This Thanksgiving, as you gather round your tables with family and friends, please remember - and say a prayer for - the men and women who serve our country on foreign soil, and the families who wait for them, back home.

Commander's Message
November / December 2009

I want to continue to thank the Post and Auxiliary Officers and other volunteers for their continued work with Bingo and other fund raisers. We still need kitchen help and help with other projects. If you have some time to spare on Tuesdays or Fridays, and would like to help with Bingo, please contact Bingo Chairman Jim Whitesell at 425-2240.

I want to encourage all members who have not yet paid their dues to send them in as soon possible.

I also would like to remind all members the Elks Lodge is having a free lunch for all Veterans on Sat. Nov. 7th.

I want to remind all of you who served of that GREAT feeling of getting a package from home during the Holidays when you were away from home. We could sure use help in sending items to our deployed troops. Some ideas are: notes of encouragement, small handheld games & batteries, stationery & envelopes, snacks (jerky, granola bars, nuts, crackers, etc.), personal care items (razors, first aid things, sunscreen, Chapstick, Q-Tips, etc.), and the like. Our box-up days are generally the first Saturday of the month, starting about 9:30 am; in November, because of the Veterans Appreciation Dinner at the Elks, it will be held on the 2nd Saturday (Nov 14) instead.

Please remember Freedoms Field on Nov. 1st thru Nov. 11th.

For God & Country,
Lyle Royer, Commander 2009-2010

Adjutant's Corner

November / December 2009

At this time of the year, we may be thinking of Thanksgiving. There are 175 members out there who should also be thinking about their 2010 membership dues. It's true that we have until December 31 to pay our 2010 dues, but there are many other things to think of in December.

I save the dues reminder cards that you include with your checks, so when someone forgets to put that card in with their check, I simply put their name and check number on a “Post-It” note and place it in the stack where the card should be. Thanks to all of you that send that card with your check.

The following Post 52 members have been transferred to Post Everlasting:

  • John R. Weichmann
  • Harry Lamprecht
  • Stephen S. Strauss
  • James M. Baker

Service Officer's Report

Remember, Vets, that the hospital in Mountain Home IS NOT A VA HOSPITAL! If the VA Clinic sends you there, you still need approval from the VA in Little Rock for care and payment, FIRST. Or you will receive the bill.

Vets that served between 1950 and 2002 and are on Social Security, check and see if you are getting credit for the time you were in the military. Take a copy of your DD-214 and ask for a review of your payments. You MAY BE entitled to more monies. Ask.

Need a ride on the van? Call early for a reservation. Also, call if you can't go or they change your appointment, so another Vet can ride the van in your place. Thanks.

Honor Guard Report

Honor Guard Military Funerals

(previous two months)

  • Sept 12 ... Charles Somers
  • Sept 15 … Charles Kronsagen
  • Sept 19 … Stephen Strauss Jr.

I’m pleased to announce that the Post 52 Honor Guard will receive certification from the National Guard Military Funeral Honors program on October 29th. What this means is that our performance meets certain military standards; it also means that, once certified, we will receive a $50 stipend from the ARNG each time we perform military honors at a veteran’s funeral. While none of us belongs to the Honor Guard for monetary rewards, these stipends will allow us to pay (at least in part) for gas to travel to funerals, uniforms, hats and other equipment necessary to continue to provide this valuable service.

We’re still actively recruiting new members to help conduct Military Funerals for deceased Veterans. If you are interested in joining, or just want more information about what is involved, please call me at 492-6333.

Another happy bit of news is that the Post 52 Honor Guard was nominated for and selected as the Mountain Home Business & Professional Women's choice for their first-ever "Pride of America" award! The award was presented October 22 at the B&PW’s annual awards banquet at Big Creek Golf & Country Club.

Jerry Montgomery
Honor Guard Captain

The American Legion -- Who We Are

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual help, wartime veterans' organization. It has evolved into a community service organization that now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments, one for each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, France and the Philippines.

The American Legion's National Headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with additional offices in Washington, D.C. In addition to the thousands of volunteers serving in leadership and program implementation capacities in local communities, all the way to the Legion's standing national commissions and committees, the national organization has a full-time staff of about 300 employees.

Membership eligibility is based on service in the U.S. Armed Forces during specific periods. Click on the "Eligibility/Membership" Link at upper left for details.
