![]() Commonly called the 4th of July, this federal holiday celebrates the birth of America as a sovereign nation. The holiday was begun on July 4th, 1776, when our American forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence, thus formally breaking governmental ties to the Kingdom of Great Britain, though official independence began on July 2nd.
It was in 1791 that the name Independence Day was first used, but it wasn’t until 1870 that Congress made it a federal holiday. This most patriotic of holidays is actually the only one to honor the United States as a country and has been celebrated in many ways over the years.
Today the festivities most closely linked to the holiday is the wearing of the nation’s colors and partaking in fireworks displays. Since 1777 a gun salute has also been a part of the 4th of July celebration, with shots made for each of the colonies. Today this "salute to the union" occurs only on Independence Day with a single shot made for each state.

![]() New Post 52 Commander, Lyle Royer
My first Commander’s Message in The Bugle is really a list of thank you’s to members of our post, beginning with Charles Jackson and Richard Cramer for the great job they did with the Installation Dinner for new post officers. Thanks to Frank Kaye for the outstanding job he did in the past four years as our post commander. His dedication and hard work will be a hard act to follow.
There are the new officers who stepped up to the plate, like Ed Parkin as the new 2nd Vice Commander, and James Bell as the new Post Chaplain, replacing Art Wallace who did an exceptional job during the past year. Thank you to Larry Voss as the new Sergeant-At-Arms and Steve Kozlowski as our new Trustee and House Manager. Thanks also to Marcia Philman for her great job as the Post Finance Officer during the past year. Big thanks to all the post membership that supported me during this current election.
There is always a thank you to the members who work our Bingo games, and the members of the Honor Guard, under the leadership of Jerry Montgomery, who make our Honor Guard one of the best in all of Arkansas.
In the weeks ahead we will honor the Boy's State delegates, Patrick Salmon and William Fletcher from Mountain Home High School, and Ricky Stokes from Norfork High School. There are the DARE Officers from area schools who participated in the Drug Awareness Program. We have just finished the 2009 “War on Drugs” Poster Contest where we had over 200 entries and awarded $100, $75 & $50 US Savings Bonds for the top three winners. We also just awarded 2 $1000 scholarships. The one from the post was presented to William Rhoads, and the one from the Bingo Committee went to Bradley Kozlowski, our former post custodian. Both boys are graduates of Mountain Home High School. By the time you read this, Brad will be packing up to head off to college in Tennessee. Congratulations to all these local students!
In conclusion, I would ask each of the new post officers to pick a fellow post member as an assistant or understudy who will be fully trained if they are elected to that position in the following year. In this new American Legion year which begins on July 1st I would like to challenge each and every member to always be on the alert for the never-ending task of recruiting new members into our post.

The Post 9/11 Veterans Education Assistance Act of 2008 greatly improved the benefit for those who've served since Sept. 11, 2001. The American Legion played a vital role, as it did when members of the organization drafted and passed the original GI Bill in 1944. The Post 9/11 benefit, which takes effect on Aug. 1, 2009, now joins the Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty, the Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve and the Reserve Educational Assistance Program.

We are now in a new American Legion year and therefore face the simple task of paying our dues for the coming year. Yes, we do have until December 31, 2009, to pay 2010 dues, but as we all know, we will shortly receive our annual "Reminder Card." I have always found it easier to pay them right away rather than waiting until I have misplaced the card. Don't forget to let me know if you change your address simply by calling me at 870-425-1075. Also, on June 20th we received a shipment of 12 new American Legion Post 52 baseball caps. If you need a new one or need to change the oil in an old one … see me at coffee on a Saturday morning or call the number above. The price is $12.00 each for the new caps. The following Post 52 members have been transferred to Post Everlasting:

So many questions about the VA and military benefits and their changes. Honest — have a question, ask your service officer or look up the County Service Officer under County Government: BCVSO 870-425-6162; American Legion S.O. same number, or at home, 870-425-6162. Health care may be changing and it doesn't sound good for retirees and others. Think about the VA as a back-up. Please pass this information to other Vets, widows and anyone that maybe affected. Thank you and Have a Safe Summer.

In addition, the Honor Guard participated in a Posting of the Colors and Post Everlasting Ceremony at 2nd District Convention on May 3; Armed Forces Sunday at First Baptist Church on May 24; and in Memorial Day ceremonies at the VFW Hall on May 25. New members are needed for the Military Funerals Honor Guard to continue to offer the service to our Veterans.

As I write this we are approaching Fathers’ Day. Although most athletes call out, “Hi, Mom!” when the camera is on them, fathers are very important also. Mothers tend to be very forgiving and love their children whatever they do. Perhaps because of that, a mother’s approval may be slightly discounted. I believe that all children, male and female, seek and need the guidance and approval of their father or a father figure. Even as adults we appreciate sponsors or mentors as father figures. We expect a father to do things for his children that he might not do for others. For those of us who believe there is a God, we want to think of Him as our Father. One of the suggested prayers in our Manual of Ceremonies addresses God as “Father of all mankind.” Actually, God is the creator of all mankind, but not the Father of all. Christianity is the only religion that claims a father-son relationship with God. Remember Pinocchio? Gepetto was not the father of Pinocchio until Pinocchio was given life. We are not God’s children until we are born again of His Spirit. John 1:10-13 (King James Version): “He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” If you would like to know Almighty God as your Father, this is the way to do it. If not, He’s still God.
For God and Country,
I look forward to serving as your new chaplain. Art Wallace will be assisting me at times. He has done, in my opinion, an outstanding job. I hope you will keep me informed of your spiritual concerns, i.e., veterans’ deaths, those that are sick, and those that may need some spiritual help. I'm also an elder at Redeemer Lutheran Church here in Mountain Home and that has given me some background. Hopefully it will help me to help you. I have no special thought to pass on to you at this time, but I'm sure I will as I settle into this new position. I ask each and every one of you for your help. God Bless all of you and God Bless the United States of America.
INCOMING POST 52 CHAPLAIN
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual help, wartime veterans' organization. It has evolved into a community service organization that now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments, one for each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, France and the Philippines. The American Legion's National Headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with additional offices in Washington, D.C. In addition to the thousands of volunteers serving in leadership and program implementation capacities in local communities, all the way to the Legion's standing national commissions and committees, the national organization has a full-time staff of about 300 employees. Membership eligibility is based on service in the U.S. Armed Forces during specific periods. Click on the "Eligibility/Membership" Link at upper left for details.
