February 5, 2008: Tornado devastates Gassville
Five Post/Unit 52 members' homes in our next-door-neighbor town of Gassville (including the one in the photo at left) were destroyed in the storm on February 5th and several others were damaged to some degree.
Thanks to everyone who donated time, money, clothing, household goods and food, less than a week after the storm we were able to deliver more than 50 moving cartons full of supplies (and $250 worth of kids' underwear and socks) to the Cotter School for distribution to families affected by the storm.
We contacted, in person or by phone, 44 Legion/Auxiliary households with Gassville mailing addresses. There were 27 Post/Unit 52 members in the affected area, 11 from Post 1000 (Dept of AR) and 6 who belong to other Posts.
We also established a Post 52 Emergency Fund through the generous donations of cash and checks by over 65 members, the community and Heber Springs Post 64 (which donated a total of $500 – half for Gassville, half for Mountain View, which was also hit by tornadoes on February 5th). Any Legion member in good standing who suffered damages from this storm (or any other natural disaster) may contact Post 52 to request assistance. Legion National also has an emergency fund available; call (317) 630-1321 for more information.
Post 52's bimonthly newsletter, The Bugle, is now available online.

MAY IS
NATIONAL MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH
Here's a "baker's dozen" ways to show support for our troops:
This site lets you send free printed postcards to U.S. soldiers stationed overseas. All you do is pick your favorite card, enter your message, and then Xerox does the rest!
- Fly the flag on your house, car, or business every day
- Send an e-mail or letter of thanks to a service member
- Send a care package to a soldier
- Organize an event in your community and at your place of work
- Ask your elected officials at all levels to recognize our military
- Wear a “Support Our Troops” wristband or shirt
- Register your support at the “America Supports You” website (www.americasupportsyou.com)
- Ask libraries, schools and other organizations to participate in recognizing our armed forces
- Ask local media (TV, radio, newspaper) to feature articles about local service members and their families
- When you see a person in a military uniform, shake their hand and say, “Thank you for serving our country!”
- Raise funds for military charities
- Hire a Veteran — visit the Hire Vets First website for more information (www.hirevetsfirst.gov)
Commander's Message
May / June 2008
Another year, another May/June Bugle goes to press. To date the Nominating Committee has been unable to recruit a volunteer for the position of Commander and if no one steps forward to relieve me, I will continue to serve in the position. In addition, many of our committee chairman positions remain unfilled. The Nominating Committee will present their slate of candidates to the members at our May meeting, so won’t you let please step forward to volunteer for one of the positions? Contact Fran O’Brien and place your name on the slate. Service to the Post is a very rewarding experience and it should be shared by all.
In past years, one of my most pleasant duties was to announce that the Legion has awarded scholarships to local High School students to help them start their college experience. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case this year. Due to the troubles that have befallen our Bingo income this past 9 months, we don’t have the financial reserves to offer them. Just recently a number of Bingo Permit holders, including myself, have formed the Arkansas Charitable Bingo Association, with the intent of lobbying the legislature in the upcoming 2009 session to change the law governing the excise tax that has put us in this position. We will also attempt to modify some other provisions which unduly hamper our operation. With any luck, we will resume offering scholarships next year.
Our latest fundraising effort (combined pancake breakfast and “Do-it-yourself” garage sale) worked out really well — so well that we will set aside the fourth Saturday of every month for the foreseeable future to hold this event. On March 26th, the Post cleared nearly $2000. Sincere thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it a success! See ad below for this month’s info.
The next District 2 meeting is set for Sunday, May 4, at 1pm and it will be hosted by our Post. We will have a potluck dinner afterwards and everyone is encouraged to attend the meeting. Please bring picnic-style dishes to be shared by all, including our invited guests from the other District 2 Posts. As usual, the election of District Officers will be held at this meeting and I’ve been asked to run for District 2 Commander. After serving this past year as District 2 Vice Commander, it is an honor to step up to the next level.
Due to a confluence of events, the election of Post Officers at our June 2nd Monthly Meeting and Potluck Supper will be followed very closely with their installation on Saturday, June 7th. This is necessary due to the Department Convention being held early this year. Tickets for the Installation Dinner will be available soon.
The 90th Department Convention will be held in North Little Rock on June 13-15, 2008, at the Wyndham Riverfront Hotel, 2 Riverfront Place, (501) 371-9000. The room rate Department has negotiated will be $89 plus tax until May 23. After that date, the rooms will be released back to general sales.
The Post will reimburse each authorized delegate (to be approved by E-board in accordance with the Post Bylaws) $225 for expenses UNLESS two delegates are sharing a room, in which case each delegate is reimbursed $150. To qualify for the reimbursement, the delegate must stay a minimum of 2 nights at the convention and provide a written report to the Commander prior to receiving said reimbursement. Anyone interested in attending the Convention as a reimbursed delegate should contact me at 424-6235.
The Memorial Day Ceremony on the Square will be Monday, May 26, at 11:00 am. The ceremony this year is being organized by Joyce Larimore of the Fleet Reserve Association and hosted by the North Central Arkansas Veterans Council. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
As always we need volunteers to put up and take down flags on the square. We will raise the flags Friday, May 23, at 9:00 am, and take them down Monday, July 7, at 9:00 am. The more hands available to work, the easier and quicker the work goes.

Adjutant's Corner
May / June 2008
As the post adjutant, I would like to talk to every one of our members and get their military story, but I know that is not possible.
What each of us can do, though, is write a brief (one page) story of our military history … where we entered service, places we were assigned, the job(s) we did, and comments about things we feel were very important to us. A number of Post 52 members have done this already.
If you would like to tell your story, please send your information to me and I will type it up, give you a copy to keep for your records and keep a copy for the post history. A snapshot of your early years in the military would be super. You can send this information to me at 1176 Leonard Drive, Mountain Home, AR 72653. Include your phone number so I can contact you if there are any questions.
Please don't feel that something silly is not worth writing about … it will be your story and as such will be a valuable contribution to the history of Post 52.
The following Post 52 members have been transferred to Post Everlasting:
- HENRY E. MACIER
- WILLIAM J. WATKINS
- JOHN H. SCHRODER
- RAYMOND A. KOSTELLIC

Service Officer's Report
Veterans are number "ONE" at the VA. You as a patient have rights and the VA wants to make sure you are taken care of. Don't let anyone try to interfere with your rights as a Veteran and patient at the VA.
If something has happened, contact your VA Patient Representative and inform them of any problems. If you had problems with a doctor or staff member, travel via the VA Van, please let the "rep" know and hopefully most problems can be cleared up.
I wish to thank all the Vets that use the van service for calling early and also for informing us if you can't make your travel day and cancel. That really helps another Vet use the service. Yes, with fuel costs going up, more Vets need the van to Little Rock.
Have a Safe Summer.

The American Legion -- Who We Are
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual help, wartime veterans' organization. It has evolved into a community service organization that now numbers nearly 3 million members -- men and women -- in nearly 15,000 Posts worldwide. These Posts are organized into 55 Departments, one for each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, France and the Philippines.
The American Legion's National Headquarters is in Indianapolis, Indiana, with additional offices in Washington, D.C. In addition to the thousands of volunteers serving in leadership and program implementation capacities in local communities, all the way to the Legion's standing national commissions and committees, the national organization has a full-time staff of about 300 employees.
Membership eligibility is based on service in the U.S. Armed Forces during specific periods. Click on the "Eligibility/Membership" Link at upper left for details.
