Sponsored by the Ready Campaign, and with support from Coalition Members across the nation, National Preparedness Month (NPM) is held each September to increase public awareness about emergency preparedness. During the month, Americans are encouraged to participate by hosting activities and initiatives. In 2008, more than 3,200 organizations joined the Ready Campaign as Coalition Members, making it the most successful year to date. NPM 2009 will focus on changing perceptions about emergency preparedness and will help Americans understand what it truly means to be Ready. It will illustrate how preparedness goes beyond fire alarms, smoke detectors, dead-bolt locks and extra food in the pantry. Being Ready includes: getting an emergency supply kit; making a family emergency plan; being informed about emergencies and their appropriate responses; and getting involved in community efforts such as Citizen Corps. For more information about NPM, visit the Ready Web site, www.ready.gov. |

Of all the things we Americans can do to support our men and women in uniform, the thing that seems to mean the most is to send them a piece of home.
Alley-White Unit 52 has partnered with our local Elks Lodge (#1714, Mountain Home) and our Post members to expand our Military Honor Roll care package program. This partnership has enabled us to send out an average of 10-15 boxes per month to deployed servicemen and women. We gladly accept mailing addresses for deployed children, grandchildren and other relatives, and also obtain names through websites such as AnySoldier.com.
Our "box-up" takes place the first Saturday of every month at the Legion Hall beginning at 10:00 am. Donations of items to include in the boxes are always welcome, as are cash donations which will be used toward postage or the replenishment of snacks and other requested items.
We also include one or more Pocket Flags in each box, and cold-weather comfort items in the wintertime.

Unit 52 received the following awards on July 11-12, 2009, at the 88th Annual Auxiliary Department convention in North Little Rock:
We also received a ribbon for our Unit flag for achieving 100% of our membership goal. Well done, Ladies!

A number of our members are experiencing health issues, and need to be remembered in our prayers. The hazard of making a list like this, though, is leaving someone’s name off – so my apologies in advance if I forget to mention your name. Past Pres. Jody McCollom continues to recover from her chemo treatments and is doing pretty well. 2nd Vice Pres. Rita Streetz is hanging in there, and will start her chemo in September. Maureen Alldredge recently had surgery. Four of our Unit members now reside at Good Samaritan, and would welcome cards & visitors: Past Pres. Dorothy Dixon, Past Chaplain Carolyn Edwards, Marion Burke, and Paula Theriot. If you know of a member who is sick, hospitalized, in a nursing home or otherwise in need of encouragement, please contact Chaplain Flossie Wiesend, at 492-6104.
Our condolences to the family of Wilma Taylor-Cramsey, who passed away July 27 in Chicago Heights, IL.
Upcoming projects include the 2nd Annual Freedoms Field flag display (click for details), and a raffle to benefit the Auxiliary Emergency Fund. Chris Schwartz has volunteered to craft at least one large Christmas tree picture out of old costume jewelry. If you haven’t seen one of these pictures, they’re amazing! The jewelry is taken apart and the pieces are mounted in a tree shape on a velvet background; the more varied the pieces are, the better it looks! If you have some old costume jewelry (especially Christmas-themed) you’d like to contribute, please bring it to the Post and we’ll see Chris gets it.
Ongoing projects include Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes; donations of small items to include in the boxes are always welcome (toys, school supplies, undies, socks, etc.). We have agreed to commit $50 per month to the Baxter Co. Retired Teachers Association for their weekend backpack food assistance program for students at Norfork Elementary School. We’re also in the process of purchasing a Spinoza Bear for the Baxter House Adult Day Care facility at Cooper Park; we’re on a waiting list, but should receive shipment with the next 3-6 weeks. We’ll make a formal presentation when “he” arrives!
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 14th – potluck dinner at 5:30 pm, business meeting at 6:30. Hope to see you there!
Your President,
Suzan Kaye
Help Unit 52 Help Others A reminder to all members that our Unit collects several different types of "proofs of purchase" from grocery items, which we either redeem for cash or donate to area schools for their use. For Best Choice items, please clip the UPC code (barcode). For Box Tops 4 Education, clip the little emblem that looks just like the picture below. For Campbell's products, clip the barcode with the Campbell's Kid's picture on it. For Tyson Project A+ items, clip the tear-strip from a bag or the flap from a box with the symbol below. We've also just begun a new effort, clipping coupons for military families who live on bases overseas. These folks have a hard time making ends meet because the cost of living is so high. Please save the coupon inserts from the weekend papers and clip ALL the manufacturers' coupons (no store coupons, such as Kroger or Walgreen's). Keep what you will use yourselves, sort the rest into "Food" and "Non-food" piles, place in zipper-style plastic bags (or recycle envelopes from your mail) and bring to the Post. A collection box has been set up on the counter under the big window in the Auxiliary room. These coupons will be gathered up, tallied and sent on a regular basis (thanks, Christine!) to our adopted base, the naval base at Rota, Spain, and distributed to the families there. Our first shipment has gone out already, with about $9000 in coupons! This is an officially sanctioned Auxiliary project, and counts toward our National Security report in the Spring. We also collect "pop-tabs" from aluminum cans, which are taken to the Ronald McDonald House in Springfield, MO (thanks, Ben & Dee!). Our last delivery weighed 60 lbs.! These tabs are recycled and the proceeds support families who stay at the House while their children receive medical care at local hospitals. Thanks for your participation! |
