"Battle of the Vets"
Blood Drive

Tuesday, October 6th, from 12 noon until 6:00 pm, at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church on Dyer Street in Mountain Home. This drive hopes to increase the number of pints of blood donated, by engaging all Veterans’ groups in the area in a friendly competition.

Please remember when donating to name your favorite Vets’ group to give the credit to, as most of us are members of multiple organizations!

The winner of the competition will take custody of a “traveling trophy” until the next “Battle of the Vets” blood drive takes place.

Announcing the 2nd Annual Freedoms Field, Unit 52’s “President’s Project” for 2009-10. This year’s fundraiser is set to kick off Friday, September 11, and will benefit local high school students and active duty service members.

Freedoms Field is patterned after the “Healing Field” concept, but on a smaller scale. Donors purchase a flag for $25; each consists of a 3’x5’ banner attached to a PVC-pipe pole, which is installed over a length of rebar driven into the ground; the flags will be set up in grid formation in the field next to Post 52 (last year's display in photo above).

All proceeds after expenses will be divided between the Legion & Auxiliary to fund one scholarship each for local students graduating from high school, plus one new scholarship for an active duty service member who wishes to further his/her education.

Each flag will come with a ribbon: red-white-&-blue for a living Veteran, yellow for a service member on active duty, and black for a deceased Veteran (or POW/MIA). A label with the Veteran’s name and name of the person/family who purchased the flag in his/her honor will be provided. Each donor will also receive a personalized certificate of appreciation.

Advance sales begin September 11th; please use this order form. The display will open to the public on Sunday, November 1, with a ceremony by Post/Unit 52; take-down is set for November 12. Donors keep their flags (banner & ribbon/label only), and must pick them up on this day, unless arrangements have been made for shipping ($5 extra per shipping address).

Freedoms Field will be open to the public for viewing from Nov 1-11; hours will be announced through local media.
