Labels & UPCs, Etc.

Please continue collecting Campbell’s product UPCs (the company wants barcodes now, not labels -- includes Swanson, Franco-American and Prego brands); Best Choice bar codes (soups, baking products, egg cartons, canned goods, pastas, rice, paper products and many other things — bar codes ONLY, please!); Box Tops for Education (found on General Mills products, including Betty Crocker & Pillsbury — please cut out ONLY the little square that says “Box Tops for Education”); and Tyson “Project A+” seals from Tyson’s breaded “ready-made” products.

We are also still collecting aluminum pop-tops from soda cans. These go to the Ronald McDonald House up in Springfield.

These items can be dropped off at the Post whenever the building is open.

February 5, 2008:
Tornado devastates Gassville

Five Post/Unit 52 members' homes in our next-door-neighbor town of Gassville (including the one in the photo above) were destroyed in the storm on February 5th and several others were damaged to some degree.

Thanks to everyone who donated time, money, clothing, household goods and food, less than a week after the storm we were able to deliver more than 50 moving cartons full of supplies (and $250 worth of kids' underwear and socks) to the Cotter School for distribution to families affected by the storm.

We contacted, in person or by phone, 44 Legion/Auxiliary households with Gassville mailing addresses. There were 27 Post/Unit 52 members in the affected area, 11 from Post 1000 (Dept of AR) and 6 who belong to other Posts.

We also established a Post 52 Emergency Fund through the generous donations of cash and checks by over 65 members, the community and Heber Springs Post 64 (which donated a total of $500 – half for Gassville, half for Mountain View, which was also hit by tornadoes on February 5th). Any Legion member in good standing who suffered damages from this storm (or any other natural disaster) may contact Post 52 to request assistance. Legion National also has an emergency fund available; call (317) 630-1321 for more information.

Local Youth Hero Awards Presented

Alley-White American Legion Auxiliary Unit 52 presented “Local Youth Hero” awards to two Nelson-Wilks-Herron Elementary School students Friday, June 6, 2008. This award honors youth under the age of 18 who put others before self and display the traits of bravery, courage and fortitude.

Sally Rae & Mica Justman

First-grader Mica Justman was nominated by his teacher, Cathleen Roberson, for leading his family to safety in the dark while being evacuated during the April floods.

Chandler Bettenhausen & Sally Rae

Second-grader Chandler Bettenhausen was nominated by his teacher, Patty Markowski, for stepping up to be the “man of the house” while his father is deployed to Iraq with the National Guard. (NOTE: We at Unit 52 think that every child whose mom or dad has been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan deserves this award -- but Chandler was the only one nominated for it!)

Unit 52 Children & Youth Chairman Sally Rae presented each boy a Local Youth Hero certificate and a $20 Wal-Mart gift card. Their nomination packets will be forwarded to the National American Legion Auxiliary’s Children & Youth Chairman for further consideration.

Please keep the soldiers and families of the 224th Maintenance Company
(Mountain Home & Marshall detachments)
in your prayers as they begin their deployment in Iraq

AUXILIARY NEWS
July / August 2008

June was a very busy month! Members of Unit 52 held our regular meeting on June 2nd, installed new officers for 2008-09 on June 7th, went to Little Rock for the annual convention on the 13th through 15th (more on this below), and helped host a spaghetti dinner at the Post on June 22nd … in between other obligations, of course. In May, we held our annual Poppy Drive, threw the Special Ed students a picnic at Hickory Park, participated in Memorial Day observances and treated 1100 Nelson-Wilks-Herron students, teachers and volunteers to animal crackers and ice cream. Also in May, we awarded $1000 general scholarships to two Mountain Home High School students, Erica Gray (a 2007 delegate to Girls State) and Zachary Harris, and elected officers for the coming year. They are as follows: 1st Vice Pres., Chris Schwartz; 2nd Vice Pres., Rita Streetz; Treasurer, Bert Whitesell; Historian, Toni Sendziol; Chaplain, Carolyn Edwards; Sgt-at-Arms, Kay Owens; Secretary, MaryAnn Sladek; and Parliamentarian, Delena Jackson. Congratulations, Ladies – it will be an honor to work with you.

From June 1-6, six Baxter County girls attended American Legion Auxiliary Girls State at Harding University in Searcy. They were Annamarie Cantrell and Samantha Shaw from Norfork High School, and Tori Gatewood, Kaylee Wedgeworth, Shelbie Bailey and Mary Petrino from Mountain Home High School. The girls will be honored at the July dinner and will receive “Good Citizenship Citations” for fulfilling their obligation to Unit 52 and their sponsors.

Six ladies from Unit 52 attended the department convention in Little Rock. Jody McCollom, Toni Sendziol, Carolyn Edwards, Sally Rae, Ann Roof and I made the trip. Jody, Carolyn and I served as pages during Friday afternoon's and Saturday’s meetings. We had a good time visiting with Auxiliary members from other parts of the state and learning how they did things at their Units. We received first place awards for Leadership (Kay Owens, chairman), Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation (Eileen Selberg), Field Service (Eileen Selberg), Community Service (MaryAnn Sladek), Children & Youth (Sally Rae), National Security (Suzan Kaye) and Public Relations (Suzan Kaye). We received second place ribbons for our Poppy program (Carolyn Hadley, chairman), finance report (Jacque Graewert), history binder (Jody McCollom), and a participant’s ribbon for our Unit scrapbook (given to everyone who submitted an entry – there were no “places” awarded).

In addition to these honors, we also brought home two very special awards. The first was presented to Sally Rae by The Department of Arkansas American Legion (not the Auxiliary), who found her “Project Baby Shower” to be the best Children & Youth project in the entire state, either Legion or Auxiliary. The second went to Toni Sendziol, who was chosen by the Auxiliary's Department Past Presidents’ Parley as the 2007-2008 Unit Member of the Year. Each received an engraved plaque which will eventually hang on the wall in our meeting room.

Also at Convention, outgoing Unit 52 President Jody McCollom was chosen to represent the Auxiliary as the 2008-09 Northwest Area Vice President, one step up from District President, the position she held last year. In closing, thank you all for the opportunity to be your Unit President — and new District President — for 2008-09. We’ve already shown that we make a good team, and with good luck and God’s blessings we’ll continue the work of The American Legion Auxiliary, here at home and in our community.

Your President,
Suzan Kaye
