Interpreting the Star Reading Test ![]() Star Reading Test Sample Reading The Graph: The image above represents the graph found at the top of the printed Star Reading report. Some of the basic information located above the graph includes the student's name, the student's homeroom teacher, the grade they are currently in, and the date the test was taken. GE (Grade Equivalent): The GE or Grade Equivalent represents the student's reading level. This is represented as a grade level and the number of months in that grade. For example, If you look at the report above you will notice that the student has a GE of 7.1. This means that this student's reading skills could be compared to a child that has spent 1 month in his/her 7th grade term in school. A GE of 3.8 would mean that a student's reading skills were the same as a 3rd grader in his/her 8th month of school and so on. We are often asked by parents, "Is my child reading where they are supposed to be?". One quick way to check is by first looking at the students GE. Compare that number to the grade your child is in and how many months they have been in that grade. This will give you some idea of his/her progress. PR(Percentile Rank): The PR or Percentile Rank represents a comparison of the student's score compared to the rest of the nation. If you look at the sample report above you will see that this student has a PR of 71. This means that this student scored the same as or equal to 71% of the 6th grade students in the nation(note that this report is that of a 6th grader. If your child is in the 5th grade it will be a comparison of all the 5th graders in the nation). PR Range (Percentile Rank Range): The PR Range represents the Percentile Rank a student would receive if he/she takes the test multiple times. In the sample report above, the student has a PR Range of 57-83. This means that if this student had taken the Star Reading test several times they would likely have received a Percentile Rank between 57 and 83. Slide Bar: This graphic is a simple bar graph that demonstrates the PR or Percentile Rank. ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development): The ZPD or Zone of Proximal Development is a representation of the book levels that will benefit the student the most. By now most of you have probably heard of the Accelerated Reader program at County Line. The Accelerated Reader program is a series of tests that check the student's comprehension of books that they have read. On the back of each Accelerated Reading book there is a small label that shows the reading level of the book. (Example: If an Accelerated Reading book has a level of 4.0 then that book is a 4th grade level book.) In the sample report above, the student has a ZPD of 4.9-6.8. This means that this student would benefit the most from reading an Accelerated Reading book with a reading level between 4.9 and 6.8.
