 Support Group Format

Please Note! As of 6/30/08 we have ended our weekly meetings.
Anxious Speakers Format Description
* All exercises are always optional participation
- Announce the Day's Agenda: We will start the meeting by announcing a general overview of the topic or issues to be discussed for that day.
- Group Check-in: The segment of the meeting when we get to meet the new members and find out what brought them to our meeting. It is also an opportunity for all present to express their most urgent concerns to everyone including whatever anxiety has been experienced since their last meeting. Support and follow-up questions from members are encouraged.
- Business Matters: During this portion of the meeting we’ll be discussing the operation, promotion, scheduling or other important matters related to the running of our support group.
- Member Feedback: At this juncture, we want to hear what is on the minds of our members so that our group is aware of everyone’s concerns. Mostly, this will be related to the content of our meetings. As well, it is hoped that we will be getting creative ideas during this time, which can add to and improve our meetings.
- Mid-meeting Break: A time to stretch, quench our thirst or chat with members.
- Anxiety-reducing Therapy: The emphasis will be on the most successful method for reducing anxiety, CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy), but other therapy techniques may be discussed or demonstrated periodically.
- Individual Performances: This is an opportunity for each person to challenge their own worst fears by choosing to get up in front of the group (or from their seats) and perform. Individuals can do interviews, speeches, readings, storytelling, demonstrations, joke telling or anything else that the person chooses to do to help them overcome their fears. There will also be discussions, often related to anxiety issues, when each member can express their opinions before the group.
- Group Theatrical Games: This is the fun part of the meeting when we try not to take ourselves too seriously and challenge those self-conscious feelings. A good way to laugh and bond with members and to end the meeting on a good note.
