PIMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE - NORTHWEST CAMPUS Film: Orfeu Room: The Community Room - 6:00pm - 8:00pm Open to the Public From the highly acclaimed Brazilian Director Carlos Diegues (Bye Bye Brazil, Xica da Silva), featuring the music of one of Brazil's most legendary musicians Caetano Veloso, comes a cinematic spectacle capturing the vibrant colors, seductive samba music and visually tantalizing ambiance of Brazil's Carnaval. Based on the play that inspired Black Orpheus,Orfeu takes place in Carioca Hill, a dangerous slum in Rio de Janeiro. Orfeu, a charismatic and beloved samba musician, leads his school each year in the Carnaval parade, refusing to abandon the slums where he was raised. When Orfeu falls in love with Eurídice, an indian girl visiting her aunt in Carioca Hill, he arouses the jealousy of his fiery mistress, forgotten lovers and childhood friend Lucinho, now a brooding drug lord. Shifting from the unvarnished brutality of drug raids and lynch mobs to the glittering specatacle of Carnaval, this romantic, dynamically beautiful film is full of life and energy. Director: Carlos Diegues Music: Caetano Veloso Portuguese with English Subtitles Year: 1999 Time: 1hr and 15 min. PIMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE -DOWNTOWN CAMPUS Film: BEHIND THE SUN Room: CC-216 6:00-8:00pm Open to the Public Golden Globe Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, Behind the Sun is a critically acclaimed story about love, loyalty and the choice a son must make between honoring his family and following his heart. In the brutal Brazilian badlands of 1910, two families are locked in a bloody, generations-old feud. In one family, the oldest remaining son-distressed by the prospect of death and encouraged by his younger brother, begins to question the cycle of violence. Then, a beautiful young woman crosses his path and opens his eyes to life outside his culture's rigid code of honor. Stunningly photographed and exquisitely told, this outstanding motion picture masterpiece will transport you to a vastly different place and time...a place behind the sun! Director: Walter Salles Portuguese with English Subtitles Year: 2001 Time: 1 hr. 45 min. |
