NRA Certified Firearm Courses
NRA Home Firearm Safety
Students learn the basics of firearm safety, including the safe handling of a firearm in the home environment. This includes nomenclature relating to the various types of firearms: handguns, rifles and shotguns. The course includes both classroom/textbook and hands on training.
NRA FIRST Steps Orientation
FIRST (Firearm Instruction, Responsibility and Safety Training) Steps is the NRA's response to the American public's need for a firearm orientation program for new gun purchasers. New firearm owners are encouraged to take the "first step" of obtaining training, and the NRA FIRST Steps Program is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper operation of one specific firearm model. Since FIRST Steps orientations are model-specific, and teach only the most basic shooting skills, they are not complete "courses" in the traditional sense of the word. They do provide a through introduction to firearm safety, handling, and shooting skills. These skills require regular practice. This is a three hour course, including a one-hour shooting session on a range.
NRA Basic Pistol Shooting
This course teaches the basic knowledge, skills and attitude needed for owning and using a pistol safely. Students will learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, gun safety and handling, selecting a pistol and much more. This is a Total Participant Involvement (TPI) course. As in all NRA Courses, safety is the number one concern and utilizes hands-on activities to reinforce the student's learning experience. This is a 10-hour course including range time. Textbook and course materials are provided.
NRA Basic Personal Protection in the Home
The course goal is to develop the basic knowledge, attitude and skills necessary for the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. Course covers defensive shooting; basic defensive handgun skills; firearms and the law -- possession, ownership, and the use of deadly force; strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation; selecting a handgun for self-defense and more. Pre-qualifications must be met for participation in this program. This is a Total Participant Involvement (TPI) class. Textbook and course materials included.
