EMERGENCY TIP

This month's emergency tip may save someone's life.

STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.... S. T. R.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough...

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently – ie. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

If you are interested in Emergency Response Course Certifications, please check out our page "PRO CPR" THANKS!

If you are a member of any White Mountain CERT teams AND HAVE YOUR CERTIFICATION, it is very important for you to register at www.azvolunteers.com. PLEASE DO SO TODAY!!!

Do you know that it could take up to 72 hours for emergency services to respond to you in the event of a disaster? Are you prepared to take care of yourself for 72 hours? Are you prepared to take care of your family? Neighbors? Community?

FAMILY MEDICAL HISTORY

The transfer seams broken. Use: http://www.hhs.gov/familyhistory/portrait/index.html

SAFETY TIP: You can never have too many emergency blankets. These tiny little covers hold in body heat as well as block out the cold. Keep one in your purse, glove box, tackle box, office drawer, one in EACH emergency kit you have, overnight bag or suitcase. You never know when one might come in handy. If not for yourself, they are so wonderful to have on hand if you witness an automobile accident. Use for covering victims or sheltering from the wind and sun.

ICE is an acronym for “In Case of Emergency”. It helps emergency medical, and law enforcement personnel identify people you want notified when you are unconconscious or unable to provide the information. The concept is quite simple: Add an ICE contact to the address book (Contact List) in your cell phone. You can have multiple ICE contacts by using ICE1, ICE2, etc. for the contacts you want listed by priority. AND PLEASE DON'T FORGET, emergency information can be written on a card, sealed in a zip-lock bag and put in your freezer door of your frig. This info can be vital to your local fire dept if you are unable to respond. Info you will want on your card, emergency contacts, medical allergies, medical conditions, daily medicine needs and where they are located and any other info you think is important to your family.
