Let me start this month’s newsletter off by apologizing for its delayed delivery. Sylvia and I have been in Seattle to welcome our new Grandson Aden into the world. Our Daughter Michelle and Son-In-Law Jesse had their healthy, Baby Boy on Friday August 22, 2008. We want to thank everybody for their support. Congratulations to Maxine Lea who won the Baby Pool at the clubhouse. The month of August was once again full of events and activities and another load of socks has been delivered. The clubhouse was put on display for the Devil Pup Honor Night and turned out to be a great success with a full house. The Detachment hosted members of American Legion Post #59 (Cocio Estrada) for a Pool Tournament which was also a full house. We want to congratulate Post #59 for winning the event and to those who have become new members. A great time was had by all and future events are now in the works. A great big THANK YOU to Roy from 59 for taking care of the logistics of the tournament as all went smooth. The Summer Luau was a sold-out event and the show was one that will be talked about for awhile. Especially the Tiger guarding or welcoming you at the entry. The placed was transformed into a Tiki Hut which put us in the mood for the evening and it all looked wonderful. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped and to those of you who came out and enjoyed the show. The pictures look great with everyone wearing colorful outfits and great big smiles after being lei. A special thanks to Ernie Menehune and his Review and to all who participated in his show for making the night memorable. The month of August was designated Wounded Marine Month and Marine Bear Munguia hosted the Wounded Marine Brunch while Sylvia and I were away and did a wonderful job along with his group of volunteers. Money will continue to be raised until September 20th so please stop by and help this fund with whatever possible as we want to help take care of our own. The month was capped off with a Motorcycle show and Fundraiser in our parking lot and on 5th Avenue for the late Hector Paz, a local musician who at various times performed at our clubhouse. Mr. Paz was a talented guitar player and taught many kids how to play. Marine Bear Munguia donated a new guitar to Mr. Paz' Daughter who just started school and was in need of one. It was presented to Her at the clubhouse during a Planning/Jam Session for the Motorcycle Event. As you can see the month of August brought much exposure and many new visitors and new members to our Detachment. We now move into the month of September which brings Detachment nominations for Officer positions. Marine Harold Don is the Election Committee Chairman and anyone interested should contact him or anyone on his staff. September 19th and 20th the Detachment will be hosting the Department Fall Staff Meeting. I would like to thank and welcome all of the Marines and Family Members who will be joining us for this event. We want to show these Marines and their families a wonderful time while they are in Tucson so there are many areas in which we are in need of volunteers. If you are interested please contact Kathy Robinson and check out the information within this newsletter. On Sunday September 21st we will be celebrating the monthly Birthdays with cake, munchies, and music by Bobby Soto y Los Recuerdos. Please remember that when the calendar within this newsletter indicates a private party, as a paid-up member you are entitled to enter the Bar Area at any time. Come out and see what is happening at the clubhouse and be a part of the activities that are taking place daily. Thanks for the support that you have given us this past year and It has been an honor to represent this Detachment as your Commandant. Until next month. Semper Fi, Al Garcia, Commandant. Chaplain’s Report:It seems that the months of August and July were the months for surgeries, we have a few members recovering: Fernando Leon (knee,) Art Jackson (shoulder,) and Julius Anguiano (kidney.) Get well soon guys. Condolences to Gaby Valenzuela and his family for the loss of his sister. Congratulations to the new grandparents, Cmndt. Garcia and Sylvia Garcia on the birth of their new grand-baby Aden. Semper Fi, Andy Herreras, Chaplain |
JR. Vice Commandant:Greetings Members, again another productive month for the Clubhouse and Detachment. Luau 08: If you didn’t attend, you missed out on fun, a great show and good food. The clubhouse was decorated to the best I’ve ever seen it. You felt like you were in the tropics. Everyone was dressed Hawaiian and great tropical drinks. Thank you to the members who spent the whole week prior decorating and to those who cooked . Wounded Marines/Marines helping Marines: The fundraiser was a great success. Over $800.00 was raised through private donations, raffles and food. Again our membership stepped up and volunteered their time and also donated items from their own pockets for food and raffles. I want to extend a special THANKS to those members who helped make this event possible: Al Majalca, Andy Herreras, Patricia Munguia, Ruth Ortiz, Ben Rivera (cook,) Virginia Rivera, Eddie Rivas (cook,) Donna Munguia, Fernando Leon( good posole!)
