The next NWU reading and open mic will be on Monday, September 15th at The Royal Sun Cafe at 1003 N. Stone Avenue in Tucson. This month the featured reader will be Judy Ray, who will be reading from her recently published collection of poetry, "Greatest Hits: 1974-2008" (Pudding House Press), as well as selections from other works. The evening will start at 5:30 or so, for those who want to have dinner; the reading will start at 6:15. The Royal Sun Cafe is just south of the Best Western Ray Sun Inn & Suites at the northwest corner of 1st Street and Stone Avenue. There is parking between the cafe and the motel that can be accessed from Stone; there is additional parking behind the cafe, which can be accessed from 1st Street. Hope to see you there!
A sudden attempt is being made to push through Congress a bill (the Orphan Works Act) that should be opposed by all writers as it seriously compromises our rights regarding copyright. GO TO THE NATIONAL'S WEB SITE AT WWW.NWU.ORG FOR DETAILS.
A committee has been formed to look into economic issues for local writers, including policies of local newspapers regarding payment and rights for op/ed and freelance pieces. We are also looking into problems that local authors are having getting their books sold at the major chain bookstores.

More than half of our members live in or around Tucson with the rest living elsewhere in Arizona or western New Mexico. And please remember: if you live in Arizona and are joining the NWU (or you are renewing your membership and are currently an "at-large" member), then please indicate on the NWU membership form that you want to be in the Tucson Chapter.
