****NWU MONTHLY READING AND OPEN MIC***

The next NWU reading and open mic will be on Monday, February 16 at The Royal Sun Cafe at 1003 N. Stone Avenue in Tucson. This month our featured reader will be Norah Booth. Norah is a freelance writer concerned with the environment, an entertainer, and is currently a teacher of writing. Her most recent publication in Thinking Classroom (October 2008), is a case study of two students from generational poverty. Other writing credits include Poets & Writers, Texas Monthly, France Today, Europa Times, Rocky Mountain Magazine, Tucson Weekly, Tucson Citizen, and Arizona Daily Star.

The evening will start at 5:30 or so, for those who want to have dinner; the reading will start at 6:15. After the reading there will be an open mic (spoken word only). The Royal Sun Cafe is just south of the Best Western Ray Sun Inn & Suites at the northwest corner of 1st Street and Stone Avenue. There is parking between the cafe and the motel that can be accessed from Stone; there is additional parking behind the cafe, which can be accessed from 1st Street.

Hope to see you there!

******FORMER NWU TUCSON CHAIR JIM WRIGHT PASSES AWAY*****

Jim Wright, longtime union organizer and former chair of the NWU Tucson unit, passed away on August 9. A tribute to him appeared in the Tucson Weekly at http://www.tucsonweekly.com/gbase/Opinion/Content?oid=114671.

******NWU OPPOSES ORPHAN WORKS ACT*****

An attempt is being made to push through Congress a bill (the Orphan Works Act) that should be opposed by all writers as it seriously compromises our rights regarding copyright. GO TO THE NATIONAL'S WEB SITE AT WWW.NWU.ORG FOR DETAILS.

******NWU TUCSON UNIT FORMS ECONOMICS COMMITTEE*****

A committee has been formed to look into economic issues for local writers, including policies of local newspapers regarding payment and rights for op/ed and freelance pieces. We are also looking into problems that local authors are having getting their books sold at the major chain bookstores.

Tucson Chapter

We are a chapter (similar in structure and function to a union local) of the National Writers Union. More than half of our members live in or around Tucson with the rest living elsewhere in Arizona or western New Mexico. And please remember: if you live in Arizona and are joining the NWU (or you are renewing your membership and are currently an "at-large" member), then please indicate on the NWU membership form that you want to be in the Tucson Chapter.

NWU TUCSON NEWSWIRE

Our news bulletin features announcements of coming events, information for and about local writers, and more. Though the paper version is currently on hiatus, an electronic version has been coming out since January 2005.
