2007
2006 came and went by quicly with loads of Pink & Red Hat Fun & Frivolity. We are looking forward to a very active & productive 2007.

This year I've invited two of our "more" active members one Pink & one Red to join me as Vice Queens. As our chapter evolves I feel it's important to recognize members who go above and beyond for their sisters as well as the community. Please join me in welcoming Queen of Vice Pink - Lady Elaine and Queen of Vice Red Helene "Pugnificenc".

Lady Elaine has undertaken a huge task in organizing and managing all aspects of our first "Hoot" appropriately titled "Under The Tuscan Sun" the event is a Red Hat Extravangaza and Womens Faire taking place on July 21st. For more information please visit our AZ News page or contact LadyElainePink@aol.com

I also started an ONLINE OOPPPS chapter and we have a great group of young ladies..all talented graphic artists and collectors. They are scattered all over the US and abroad as far as Japan, England & Canada. Welcome OOPPPS ladies.

Please visit our photo gallery for updates on our events.

Last but not least, we have also registered our very own RED HAT TARTAN. I'm elated to announce the inception of "The MacHatters of The Old Pueblo". We are having our Scarves and Kilts weaved in Scotland as I write this and we are happy to announce that we have been granted permission to partake in the 2007 Celtic Festival in Tucson.

2006

Our Chapter has grown in leaps and bound and we are just loving every minute of it. Every month we learn more and more about our lovely chapter sisters and experience many a joyful outing. This year we've expanded our outings from twice a month to fit in more community events. From the St. David Festival, to Geocaching with our DH and much much more.
I'm excited to announce that our very own Opie is visiting in April and hopefully will get to meet some of you. She will be attending our Dessert Night on April 7th with another member Susy who I am also anxious to meet, so please join us.
Opies Beads

Susy & Opie at OOPPPs Dessert Night 4/7/2006

Just after September 11, 2001…Opies Beads began going in the mail to the Red Hat ladies all over the U.S. and to other countries.

Opies Beads can be worn when you go to Red Hat events. They love to cut up, laugh, and have fun.

They are a reminder that so much has been done because of this lady who wears them or who has them laying quietly on her dresser.

This lady has helped to create our society by working hard to make sure that the needs are met for a lot of people. Opies Beads are a small gift to her so hopefully she will remember what she means to others.

She has taken care of her children, family, parents, husband, … she has worked for her community.

These ladies make up the largest portion of the volunteer force which helps operate our country.

The explanation for Opies Beads is complicated. I think it comes from all of our sisters.

The beads are made for Red and Pink hat sisters only … One time they were a gift to the Dominican Sisters of Oxford, Michigan. These nuns knew.. right away.. the meaning of Opies Beads.

Today these nuns ask me if I am still making the beads and sending them out. When I tell them.. “yes they are sister,” they smile and tell me .. “that’s good”.

Opies Beads are pressure .. LOL ..! When you have 15 or 20 Dominican Sisters watching what you are doing … well … that’s pressure ! LOL (kidding)

They are an expression of gratitude and fun. They should always remind you of love and laughter.

The beads are a circle of gold thread. The Red Hat sister who receives them is one bead on that thread. The remainder of the beads represent the people she holds very dear to her heart .. in around circle .. called Opies Beads.

(Google Opies Beads for great forums on the beads)

Janaury 2006 Dessert

Despite the Red Hat Society being known for "having fun" and "It's all about me" our chapter has chosen to "give back to others" as well.

Our Chapter will Adopt-A-Famiy for the December Holidays. Chapter dues and a special collection will be combined in order to do this through the Catholic Family Services. This will not only be a "fun" project but a most worthwhile, feel good event".

We are also in the process of collecting funds to Build-A-Bear on December 3rd at the Tucson mall. And all our wonderful members who craft and sew are participating as well by buying the materials necessary to make bears, bunnies and clothing for them. We hope to donate 50 stuffed animals to a worthy cause.

Sugar High from Septembers Dessert Night

Jim and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day While they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out. When the director of Nursing became aware of Edna's heroic act, she considered her to be mentally stable. When she went to tell Edna the news she said, "Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged; since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of another patient, I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness. The bad news is that Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in his bathroom with the belt to his robe right after you saved him. I am sorry, but he's dead." Edna replied, "He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry. How soon can I go home?"
GRANDMA'S CURES (Use at your own risk!) Boil Cure Cover the boil with Hunt's tomato paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head. Blisters To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine... a powerful antiseptic. Bruises Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process. Bug Killer If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you can't find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly. Burns Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns. Headache Pain Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately -- without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional "pain relievers." Nose Stuffed? Try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They'll clear up your stuffed nose. Muscle Ache Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief from aching muscles. Pain Relief. Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain. Rust Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done. Skin Blemishes Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight. Splinter Remover Pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue. Throat Sore? Mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria. Toenail Fungus Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again. Urinary Tract Infections Dissolve two Alka Seltzer tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms. Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly. Pets – Fleas Dawn dish washing liquid kills fleas instantly. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Pets – Odor Wipe down the animal with Bounce or any dryer sheet, instantly making your dog smell springtime fresh. Pets – Mites All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.

Kazooing Safety Rules:
Never stick the kazoo up your nose.
Do not inhale through the kazoo.
In subfreezing temperatures, use ONLY plastic model kazoos, since a metal kazoo could become permanently affixed to lips and/or tongue.
Use protective covering to keep your kazoo free of purse/pocket lint or belly button fuzz.

Kazooist Safety/Health Rules:.
Prevent lip fatigue by adhering to short practice sessions, lengthening them only when your embouchure muscles have achieved schwartznegerian definitions.
To avoid cramping, chafing, and blistering, induce a North Carolina farmer to reveal the contents of the ointment they have used for generations to treat cows with chapped udders.
Directly before an important performance (what kazoo player performance is unimportant?) the professional and courteous kazooist (and what kazooist is not courteous?) ABSTAINS from such substances as beer, chili, garlic or other dyspeptic foods UNLESS hiccoughing is a desired effect in the music.
Directly post performance, the kazooist becomes - in all respects - a bon vivant indulging in a large array of food, beverages and types of social intercourse.

To Be A Kazooist:.
Be on time
Be intense
Be full of breath
Be good to your leader!

Directions for Making the Original Bra Purse©

Materials List: Under wire bra with personality and some "body", size to be determined by what you want to carry, whether it is a lipstick and a credit card, or wallet, hairbrush, and mouthwash. Hot glue gun and glue sticks - Basin of cold water to be used in conjunction with the hot glue gun.
Heavy needle and thread & Scissors

Embellishments: whatever speaks to you, sequins, beads, feathers, fringe, lace, birds, butterflies, flowers, etc.. Anything you can carry is appropriate. The bra purse is extremely simple to make as there are no mistakes, only opportunities to express yourself and have fun! The first thing I did was to cut away the back of the bra, leaving perhaps 3/4 of an inch of Lycra that is then pulled over a thin application of glue and into the cups of the bra. The backs of the shoulder straps are severed at this point and left attached to the front to see if they will be of service later. The hinge at the front of the bra can now be tucked in and secured to the structure of the wires with a bit of hot glue. Now is an excellent time to attach any dangling embellishment from the bottom of the bra with the hot glue gun. By now you will probably have used the basin of cold water. Glue guns and sticks leave an immediate and painful impression, you may find toothpicks or other implements helpful. Fold the bra together, matching the curvature of the under wires, when you have a good feel for how it should fit, apply a healthy bead of hot glue and stick that rascal together. You will want to hold it firmly until the glue does it’s job.

You now have a bra purse, you still need to develop a handle, a closure and embellish. You will find that you can reattach the straps to the back of the bra with needle and thread, I took the back closure and glued both sides from the inside across the top of the purse for a "hook and eye" closure, if you choose to do this, just experiment with the length and cut away the excess from the already cut edges. You can also attach one side, apply a heavy article (perhaps a piece of jewelry) and let it hang across the top to keep the bra purse closed.

You have all the structural work done and now comes the fun part. Making it your own, one of a kind of "bra art" accessory. Tassels were my first addition (suggestion of the husband - now, what is that about?). Use the glue gun, use needle and thread, or if you are making an "office" model, paper clips. Your imagination is the only limitation to what you can accomplish. Enjoy!!!!!!!! Please email pictures of your finished product to mawebb@alderson.com
