ABOUT PROJECT LINUS:

A HUGE THANK YOU to each of our wonderful volunteers!

Together, you made 5,008 blankets for Project Linus' Tucson Chapter during 2011.

This was 134 fewer blankets than in 2010, and yet our requests from recipient facilities are increasing. We appreciate each blanket that you have made! Please spread the word to your friends, or better yet, bring a friend to our monthly meeting to learn about Project Linus.

Since the inception of this chapter through December 2011, 36,692 blankets were delivered to children in the Tucson area.

When the chapter began in Spring 1999, our goal was to ultimately reach 1,000 children.

Instead, look what's happened!!!! With the help of over 300 women, men and children, who regularly make and contribute blankets, Project Linus Tucson has given the gift of a security to many thousands of children.

There are nearly 400 Project Linus chapters covering all 50 states. Together, volunteers in these chapters have given over 4 million security blankets to children!

NATIONAL ORGANIZATION'S MISSION STATEMENT:

Project Linus is a volunteer non-profit national organization with a twofold mission.

  • To provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through the gifts of new hand made blankets and afghans that are lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers".
  • To provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

NATIONAL ORGANIZATION'S HISTORY:

Project Linus began in Denver on Christmas Eve 1995 when an article appeared in Parade Magazine entitled, "Joy to the World". Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams, it featured a petite downy-haired little girl who had been undergoing intensive chemotherapy. The article stated that her security blanket helped her get through treatments.

Karen Loucks read the article and decided to provide homemade security blankets to Denver's Rocky Mountain Children's Cancer Center.

The idea grew, Charles Schultz's family gave permission to use the blanket-toting Linus as the logo, and Project Linus was born.

DONATE:
Project Linus is a 501c3 volunteer, non-profit organization with nearly 400 chapters throughout the United States. As an all-volunteer chapter we appreciate your assistance in meeting our mission goals and hosting our annual Make-A-Blanket Day. We rely on contributors to meet our twofold mission:
  • To provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through the gifts of new hand made blankets and afghans that are lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers".
  • To provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.

The Tucson Chapter gratefully accepts:

  • gift certificates for fabric, yarn or office supply stores, postage stamps
  • contributions from your employer's United Way program (write in Project Linus Tucson)
  • and of course, money. Monetary contributions are tax-deductible and help defray the operating costs of our all-volunteer effort.

Checks made payable to "Project Linus, Tucson Chapter" may be sent to: Tucson Chapter Coordinator Rene Lassise, 7981 S. Farmview Pl., Tucson, AZ 85756. Rene can be reached at (520)574-2103.

PARENTS Magazine named Project Linus as one of the 10 Children's Charities to support.
VOLUNTEER:
We are always looking for new volunteers who will make blankets, and for committed volunteers who are willing to take on non-blanketmaking tasks to support the Tucson Chapter.

NOTE: Project Linus Tucson's volunteers do not make blankets during their monthly meetings. Project Linus Tucson's blankets are made at home, or by small groups. Very occasionally, we do schedule "work parties" or blanket-making events (which are announced on this web site.)

  • At-home blanket makers, see "Blanket Guidelines" and "Blanket Drop-Off" pages.
  • Groups who support our effort, and who welcome new members, are listed on the "Join A Group" (further down on this page).
  • Many of the shops that act as drop-off points for our blankets also offer instruction. See "Blanket Drop-Off" page.

Project Linus Tucson's monthly meetings are times when liaison volunteers bring in blankets they have collected from drop-off points. Volunteers who are liaisons to our recipient facilities select appropriately-sized blankets to deliver. Blankets are actually given to the children by nurses, or members of the facility's staff.

If you are interested in becoming a Project Linus volunteer, you are welcome to drop by one of our meetings (see Calendar) to see the volume and types of blankets we deliver.

JOIN A GROUP: Working with a group is a great way to learn while doing. Some of the groups that make blankets for us (like Eastside Knitters) specifically offer instruction.

Following is a list of sewing/knitting groups that donate blankets to Project Linus and welcome newcomers:

  • AMERICAN SEWING GUILD, TUCSON CHAPTER, Membership Chairperson Brenda Somers, 818-0559. ASG members enjoy all types of sewing; they are not blanket-specific. Neighborhood groups tackle a variety of projects. The chapter holds events and classes. Membership includes discounts at many sewing-related businesses.

  • CDO ASSEMBLY OF GOD CHURCH, Lambert and Shannon, contact person: Linda Hinson, 991-6264. Friday mornings, 9-12, the group meets in the foyer of the church to make blankets.

  • EASTSIDE KNITTERS Tanque Verde Luthern Church, Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00, meet in the TLC house on NW corner of the property. Also, All-Day Knit on 4th Saturday from 9:00-3:00. Open to all. (New knitters who want to learn should attend a Saturday event.) Crocheters and stitchers also welcome at these gatherings.

  • GRACE COVENANT CHURCH SEWING GROUP (Tucson) Barbara Moore 797-9198, 4th Tuesdays 9:00 a.m., year 'round.

  • HARRISON HILLS/PANTANO VISTA SEWING GROUP (East Tucson) Ruth Reinhardt 721-7603, Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. (Breaks for summer, resumes in fall)

  • NORTHMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH QUILTERS (Central Tucson) Wed., 9-11 a.m., year 'round. Meet at the church's multi-purpose room, 2450 E. Ft. Lowell. No experience needed. Call Annie at 323-0646 or Pat, 887-5861 if you'd like to attend a session.

  • OLD PUEBLO KNITTERS (Tucson) Connie Mallette 886-4772, 3rd Thurs., 9:30-11:30 a.m. plus various weekly meetings.

  • CHURCH OF THE RISEN SAVIOR (Green Valley): those who knit or crochet contact Jean Wagner, 625-7239.

If your group makes blankets for Project Linus and you would like to be added to this list, contact our Chapter Coordinator through the "Contact us" section at the lower righthand corner of our Home Page.
