Spring 2012

Hello everyone. We have been away for a while, because most of the members of our band had to travel abroad. It has been a couple of years of traveling for us all.

One of the most exciting things that happened in 2011 was that two members of Sambalanco actually were present at the 2011 Carnaval Parade in Rio de Janeiro. Only one actually paraded while the other took pictures. Both Carola Murphy and Dan Samson traveled to Rio de Janeiro. While Carola participated as a seahorse in one of the main bloco's of GRES Uniao da Ilha do Governador, Dan Samson took pictures of her and the whole parade. Carola and Dan both arrived to join two other friends that were already in Rio. By the time they arrived, Carola's custom had already arrived in their apartment and that same night, she was in the 4th bloco at the beginning of the March 7th, parade. She was interviewed and was also filmed for Globo TV. You can see her on the right side of the screen in Part 3 of the parade.

Also this year was tremendously succesful for Orestes Morfin who returns to our band. Orestes has traveled for a few months in Europe and Asia with his band "Bitch Magnet" and has also re-issued all the CD's that made the band a favorite in the 80's. All his venues were sold out and Orestes has also returned to the recording studio. You may keep tabs on Orestes and Sambalanco also in Facebook and Twitter.

So this year, we all gathered together to come up with new songs based on the great music we heard in Brasil this year, and we hope you all come and join us for Carnaval. It promises to be a great show!! See you all there on February 18th, 2012!

Summer 2010

Hello everyone, we hope you are enjoying your summer as it comes to an end. We are going to start rehearsing again as we approach Brazilian Week, Tucson Meet Yourself 2010, and of course Carnaval 2011.

We will playing Carnaval again this coming year on March 5th and the next day on the 6th, some members of our band are traveling to Rio de Janeiro to experience Carnaval at first hand. Everyone is very excited and we have rented an apartment in Ipanema so that we are all comfortable to attend all the Balls and Festitivites in Rio. Expect great news this coming year as we work to solidify our ties with the Brazilian Consulate and Embassy and the Government of Brasil. We will be bringing new music for the year too and we'll be visiting our sponsors Contemporanea Drums, in Sao Paulo. Muito Obrigada!

Fall 2009 and Spring 2010

The past year has been an extremely exciting year for Sambalanco. We were fortunate to add as musicians, people of exceptional caliber who have played Brazilian music before, so we are extremely happy to welcome them to our group.

Sambalanco besides playing at public events, like Hotel Congress, El Parador, Biosphere, PCC, has also been very fortunate to count with private invitations from the Ambassador of Brasil for the Ambassador's Ball in Scottsdale. In addition, we have played with our sister bands Toa Toa and Brazukas, in many events. Sambalanco has the support of the Brazilian Consulate in Los Angeles. Our band members will travel to Brazil right after Carnaval, so that we can get to experience true Carnaval in places like Salvador and Porto Seguro. It truly will be an experience.

Two of our members are part of the Tucson Brazilian Week Committee and are hoping to bring the Director of the School of Samba that won this year's Carnaval, Mestre Sombra. He has been recognized by all Schools of Samba and the City of Sao Paulo, as the best this year, in terms of presentation, music, lyrics, rhythm and theme. Mestre Sombra Seja Bemvindo!

Sambalanco has its own private listserv that sends flyers to a large audience all the way to Scottsdale and Los Angeles. Thank you for all your support and love. Also, Muito obrigada!

Journalists from Sao Paulo wrote a couple of articles about our band that were published in Sao Paulo. Obrigada!

We are preparing to celebrate our second Tucson Brazilian Week, the week of September 7-13th. Please check their website for all calendar of events related to TBW.

We are now in our 34th year of celebrating Brazilian Carnaval in Tucson. This coming year we will celebrate it on Feb. 27th 2010. This celebration is not new as it has appeared lately in the news, it was started by the Brazilian Community in the year 1975 by professor Nivea Parsons who worked through the 80's with Bill Martinez and who eventually took over when Nivea could no longer devote time to it. We hope you can join us for both events.

This are all our news so far, until we see each other again, have a great summer!
