Scholastic Clay Target Program

Welcome to the Buckeye Sportsman Club Scholastic Clay Target Program. We are part of the Arizona Game & Fish department's Shooting Sports program. The Scholastic Clay Target Program provides school-age participants in grades 12 and under with the opportunity to showcase their competitive shooting skills and earn state and national recognition. The program is designed to instill in participants safe firearms handling, commitment, responsibility, leadership and teamwork.

The Scholastic Clay Target Program is a cooperative effort between the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearms industry's largest and most diverse trade association with 2,200 members, and the governing bodies for trapshooting, skeetshooting and sporting clays shooting - the Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA), the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) and the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA), respectively.

As always, if you are unable to attend the sign up day you are welcome to sign up at any class. This year we will be holding 1 class each month with extra practice sessions and optional competitions each weekend.

We will furnish the eye and ear protection, shotguns for use while on the range, and 100 rounds of ammunition and clay targets for the instruction sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Are these classes safe? Yes. Safety is our primary mission at all times. Beginning students will only be allowed to touch a firearm if an instructor is within reach. Students will not be allowed to touch ammunition until they have passed the basic firearms safety test. Parents and coaches together will decide when students are ready to move to the next level of responsibility.

What will it cost? As with any sport, you can invest as much or as little money as you wish. At the basic level, the Buckeye SCTP will provide all of the equipment needed to learn and compete. This allows beginning shooters to learn without a substantial investment. Your coaches can make make further recommendations as your skill level improves.

May I bring my own shotgun? Yes, provided that it is in good working order and is appropriate for what we are doing.

What are the physical requirements? You need to be able to lift a 7 pound shotgun (about the same weight as a gallon of milk) without assistance. You need to be able to see an orange target 4 1/4 inches in diameter at a distance of 50 yards. If you can see a stoplight, you'll do just fine. Students who are physically or developmentally challenged are welcome. Please see a coach for more information.

Can girls compete? Yes. Both the 2007 Skeet and Trap SCTP champions are girls. Arizona even has it's very own ladies world champion: Emily Blount!

Are the coaches certified? Yes. All SCTP coaches are certified by the Arizona Game & Fish Department as youth coaches. Every coach has passed a background check by the Arizona DPS. The Buckeye coaching team has over 30 years of competition shooting experience and have been part of the Arizona SCTP since the beginning of the program.

Do parents have to attend the classes? Parents are required to attend classes until their child has passed the basic firearms safety test. Parents are allowed and encouraged to participate in the classes and practice sessions.

Are you insured? Yes. Students are covered by the State of Arizona while attending any event where a coach is present.

How old do you have to be? Any students between the ages of 9 and 20 that are enrolled in school (public, private, or home) and have not yet graduated from high school can join. High school seniors who graduate while enrolled in the program are allowed to finish the shooting season.
