![]() I have heard so many times, "but I moved here for the trees!". I fully understand that feeling, I too, moved to the mountains for the trees! It's hard to cut down beautiful live trees, and thin our property to make it fire resistant, but it can be beautiful. The really important thing is that in making your home and property fire resistant, you may actually be saving the trees. With the spread of the bark beetle, thinning the trees not only makes our properties fire resistant, but it gives the remaining trees a better chance at receiving the water they need. | Currently there are over 22,000
"at risk" communities, facing wildfire disaster, across the United States. Wildfire should be handled much like any other natural disaster. The confusion following a disaster can be very scary, especially if you are NOT prepared. You've probably heard this before but it's true.

Wildfire Recovery Assistance was born on the heels of the Rodeo/Chediski Wildfire of 2002. It was the largest wildfire in Arizona's history. We realized very quickly that "recovery" wasn't only up to the Federal Government. Every step was a partnership between residents and all levels of government, town, county, state and Federal. Even local volunteers and "faith based" groups were very much part of the recovery process. Emergency service groups were soon swamped and little was known or understood about the role that FEMA would play in both the short term and long term recovery process. We found that a lot of the anger and confusion toward the Government could have been avoided if we had been given solid information in the beginning. Understanding the roles and performance of service groups can be very comforting. |
It's surprising to learn that most people believe they are "ready" for a disaster. They run the "what if" through their minds. They think about what would be important to take, which items are most valuable and where they would go. But the reality of a wildfire or almost any other natural disaster can be very different. For some of our residents the order to evacuate only gave them 10 to 15 minutes. Items could not be located and packed. Pets and livestock were impossible to rescue. They were fortunate to even pack enough clothes. Prescriptions were left behind. The reality of the event was a shock to most evacuees. An emergency plan is far more complicated. But with planning ahead anyone can set up a simple, easy to follow plan. If you were planning a trip out of town for a few days you would certainly use a guideline to help prepare your family for the trip. Evacuation is just an unplanned trip. Every home, no matter if it's one person, a family of 4, or a family with an elderly member NEEDS an emergency plan. This applies to any home in American.
