Wild Cats ![]() A Bengal Tiger Taking its prey by surprise, a Bengal tiger springs through the Indian jungle and strikes down a frightened deer. Hiding in a tree is a South American jaguar, who tenses its muscles, and suddenly leaps at a passing tapir. Like every kind of cats, they need to have good hunting skills. Tracking, stalking, and chasing. They must do so to win a meal, for they live in a group called carnivora, which is the group of mammals that use flesh as snacks. In the mouth, there are four sharp, long, and deadly K-9 fangs. On the sides, they have teeth with razor-edges easily cut through hides and flesh. ![]() The front feet of a wild cat has five sharp claws, and the back feet has four. And when the claws are not used at the time, they are protected by pockets on the paws. The bottom of each paw are also cushioned by soft pads, so the hunter can creep to its prey and...you know the rest. As all deadly hunters, very sharp senses are on the cat. Its whiskers are a good tool for touch, because it is attached to its nerves. Since the cat usually preys at night, the back of the eve is coated with a polished silver like substance. It is for reflecting every bit of light. And so that is why it is such a good night hunter. The female cats usually have 2 to 4 babies at a time, each weighing less than a pound and 8 to 12 inches long. Until they are 2 month old, the mother's milk is the only food the babies eat. When they are 3 month old, they will start to look for flesh. Now the female brings them along for her real hunting trips. The growing cub usually stays with it's mother for 6 to 8 months. And by the time they are accomplished hunters, they are ready to face the world on their own. |
