The cat family turned to meat-eating mammals about 30,000,000 years ago. They developed along two kinds: the typical cat we know today, and the saber-toothed cat. These saber-tooth cats grew giantic, dagger-like canine fangs. They would stab again and again to kill its victim. But all saber-tooth cats died out in the Ice Age. Now only the "true" cats spread throughout the world.

The first time cats were domesticated was about 8,000 years ago. They come from the island of Cyprus. And that is where remains of humans, cats, and mice were uncovered together. To let the wild cats overcome the fear they had on humans, they were likely to have been captured as kittens and then taken care of like house cats.
