Hamsters are little mammals in the rodent family. They have large front teeth that grow continuously, necessary for it to gnaw(chew) on hard objects to prevent the teeth from overgrowing. The word 'rodent' came from the latin word 'rodere' which means 'to gnaw'.

It is said that a hamster resembles a tiny bear. Each front feet has four toes and a small thumb. But the sharp claws(don't worry, they can't scratch you) are well adapted for climbing, and especially, digging. And the back legs are mostly the same. But the little creature waddles when it walks because of it's short legs. It's eyes are bold and round, and the ears are large. The tail is about a third of an inch long.

Hamsters are very quiet animals, with babies as an exception. As they run around, the little ones squeal and they cry when nipped by another hamster. One of the hamster's most unique thing is it's cheek pouches. The pouches are found on the side of the head and will double the size of the hamster's head when full. When not in use, they are about and inch deep, but grows another inch when jammed with food. This may sound funny, but wait till you actually see it!

Telling a male from a female isn't all that hard. The female is about a inch longer and a half ounce heavier than the male hamster. The butt of the female is mostly bare, with some other hair maybe; and it is also more round while the male has a extended butt. And the male's penis is about 1/4 of an inch away from the rear.
