Pet Hamster When looking for a hamster at the pet shop or wherever, it is wise to choose one that is 4 to 8 weeks old. That is because a hamster's lifespan is only 2 to 3 years. And also, you will want to choose a hamster from a place where it has been well treated. If you just get a unhealthy hamster from a lousy pet shop, it's possible you will get a ill-tempered or short-lifed one. Avoid skinny hamsters or ones with bald patches of fur. To see the hamster's friendliness or curiosity, let the rodent be placed on a table. Then offer him/her a treat(rasin, seed, peanut). A curious hamster will come right to you. Then let your hand hover above him so he will see it. Then, if he doesn't run away, you can close your hand firmly, but gently, around his entire body. Never pick up a hamster suddenly or else he will be sure to bite you. If he seems afraid on your hand, of is hard to pick up, choose another hamster and follow the same process. If you buy one hamster, don't worry about him being lonely. But if you do buy two or more, DO NOT put them in the same cage, except for breeding purposes after they're eight weeks old. For a cage, you should buy one with a wire fence. And if possible, have something surrounding the cage, for a hamster has an amazing ability to squeeze throught the wires. Be sure that he has something to chew on so his teeth don't over grow(you can use a piece of wood with out splinters). It should be a little bigger than the hamsters head, or else he might swallow it. You might also want to put in a running wheel for exercise. But if you do, don't be surprised to hear in spinning during the night! |
