March 10, 2005 Broadcast to Ndi Anambra on PDP's purported Expulsion BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY, DR. CHRIS NWABUEZE NGIGE (OON), GOVERNOR, ANAMBRA STATE OF NIGERIA TO THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE FOLLOWING HIS PURPORTED EXPULSION BY THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) My Fellow Anambrarians, On Thursday March 10, 2005, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) met in Abuja to consider the report of the Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola Committee, which sat last month on the political crisis in our State. At the end of that meeting, those in attendance resolved to expel me from the Party for alleged anti-party activities. Of course, as expected, they added Chief Chris Uba’s name in the expulsion list to give the impression that they were impartial in their decision even when it is clear to all and sundry that he had been expelled from the Party since 2003. But we know who the target is and that my offence for incurring the wrath of the new owners of the party, as represented by those who took the decision, was because I have continued to insist that monies accruing to the State must not find their ways in private pockets but rather should be used to develop our land which had suffered untold neglect since its creation in 1991. Since July 10, 2003, when the first attempt to illegally remove me from office was made by Chief Chris Uba and his cohorts, several other attempts have equally been made either to force me out of office or make it difficult for the Government to function. But despite all these distractions, we have remained focused and undaunted in the task of developing our State and restoring your confidence in government business, believing that with your prayers and our resolve to serve you, we shall overcome these difficulties and imperfections in our democratic system and march unstoppable to the Promised Land. I am happy that you, the good people of Anambra State , appreciate our modest efforts as is evident in the numerous telephone calls, letters and solidarity visits we receive each time a fresh attempt is made to force us out. I thank you all for your patience and resilience and urge you to remain vigilant as the enemies are not relenting. As you are aware, I have since that expulsion decision was taken informed my solicitors to head for the Courts to challenge it as we consider it repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience. According to Article16 (C) (v) of the PDP constitution, the purported expulsion can only take effect if ratified by the National Convention of the Party scheduled for November this year but even at that I did not face a disciplinary panel as stipulated by the Party’s Constitution. However, since we are in a constitutional democracy and in pursuance of the enforcement of my fundamental human rights, I shall challenge the decision in court. In the meantime and in accordance with the provisions of that Article, I remain a bona-fide member of the Party. I am not unaware that since that unfortunate decision was taken, there has been some palpable disquiet in the State as some of you have continued to express worries at the status of your Government. Let me then assure you that the situation is under control. The machinery of Government is intact and functioning. The Government shall continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities to you. In the next few days the Government will be flagging-off the construction of more roads and water schemes. Other programmes and projects of Government are intact and being executed. We will not relent until the State takes its pride of place in the comity of States of Nigeria. May I, therefore, appeal to you to remain calm and go about your normal businesses as law enforcement agencies have been mobilized to ensure that nobody is molested. Workers and teachers should be at their offices and schools respectively and man their duty posts without any fear. Let me also seize this opportunity to warn all trouble makers that the Government will not tolerate any further lawlessness and destruction of private and public property. Enough is enough! Meanwhile, I have directed the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu, not to grant any permits for political rallies in whatever form; be it for demonstration for or against the decision of the PDP National Executive Committee. The ban on public processions will remain in force for two months in the first instance. All Anambrarians are enjoined to cooperate with the Government and law enforcement agents to ensure that hoodlums and enemies of the State do not exploit the situation to unleash mayhem and rupture the peace and tranquility currently subsisting in the State. Parents are hereby warned to keep eyes on their wards and restrain them from being recruited for any nefarious activities. The people of Anambra State and indeed all Nigerians are hereby alerted of a fresh plan, as part of this expulsion script, to use mobile policemen to again provide cover for Chief Chris Uba and his cohorts so that they would embark on another round of burning of Government property and if possible this time harm me and top officials of the Government. Already, we have drawn the attention of all Nigerians and indeed the International Community to this undemocratic and jungle justice being perpetrated against a federating unit of Nigeria . Finally, I once again I appeal to you to remain calm but vigilant and refrain from being used to derail the infrastructural development revolution currently being witnessed in the State. Thank you and may God bless Anambra State . Dr. Chris Nwabueze Ngige, OON Governor, Anambra State .
