Fall 2011, I'm the one on the left

Greetings All!

A word about the math classes in general.

If you would like an idea of how we are approaching each section and chapter of math, be it Pre-Algebra or Algebra, here are some general guidelines of how the students will receive their grades.

Homework

I give homework for each section we cover and I proceed pretty much through the book as printed. I do not ‘jump around’. When I give homework, I assign odd numbered problems in the section’s ‘exercise’ pages, as the answers for these are in the back of the textbooks. Class work assignments will usually consist of the even numbered problems in the section exercises. Homework assignments (if counted) will count for only 3 points each from now on which means the quizzes and tests are taking on more worth.

Quizzes and Tests

Tests are preceded by practice quizzes and tests as well as reviews of home work and classroom assignments (I want to feel that the students have been given reasonable opportunity to be ready for their exams). As noted in the above section the quizzes and tests are weighted more as the year goes along. The hope is that the students will realize the value of doing the homework to prepare for exams and solidify the knowledge and also have less anxiety about test taking after they have experienced what the tests and quizzes are like. However, it seems that there will always be prayer in school as long as we have tests.

I have also instituted a practice this year for students who wish to earn a higher grade on their test. Instead of retaking the entire test, a student needs only to see me when our schedules allow, and prove to me that he/she knows where the mistake was made (explain to me and solve some similar problems) and I will give them credit for the answer on the test. A student may improve their grade up to a ‘B’ in this manner but not to an ‘A’; that should be accomplished on the ‘first try’.

Note Books

The student is to keep a notebook for the class. Notes must be taken using the Cornell Method. Each page must be dated and organized. Homework is also to be kept in the notebook with the assignment’s page(s) and numbers assigned at the top of the page. Where possible, the student must show his/her work so I will be able to see if they understand the process we are covering. Completed homework is stamped as a sign that they have done the work. Class work is also kept in the notebook. The notebook will be checked about once every 4 weeks. All of the notebook pages should be used with no blank or ‘skipped pages’ (students should not be wasteful).

Lastly, participation points can be earned (not an unlimited amount, though) by publicly demonstrating work to the class.

If you have questions, concerns, or suggestions my email (by far the best way to reach me!) is cdonaghho@saint-elizabeth.org

I am privileged to serve your student!

Seventh Grade Math (Pre Algebra)
Pre Algebra has an emphasis on working with numbers and equations and understanding the underlying mathematics principles.

 Eighth Grade Math (Algebra)
Algebra will have an emphasis on writing, solving, and graphing linear and quadratic equations. Mathematical reasoning is interwoven throughout.

Thurs. No Homework

Fri. - Pupil Free Day, No Homework

Physical Education and Athletics
Physical Education will cover activities for fitness (exercise), fun and recreation (including dance), and relaxation techniques (such as stretching and yoga). We will also discuss areas related to Physical Fitness ie nutrition, monitoring health, and support strategies for gaining and maintaining fitness. The students have Physical Education formally for a total of one hour per week so, our program actually will introduce the students to the different aspects and then, hopefully, they will have knowledge of how to incorporate Physical Education into their lives as needed.

As for Athletics, Saint Elizabeth is under the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). We field teams in Flag Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, Soccer, and Track and Field. Students may participate if they are at least in the 5th grade (3rd and 4th graders may participate in some Track and Field events). For more information about the CYO go to their web page at cyousa.org (see Links).
