THE RED HAT SOCIETY STATEMENT OF PURPOSE!
* To poke fun at those of us who take life too seriously 364 out of 365 days a year
* To make regal the red brim and purple frock of their own choosing
* To plan and execute together excursions of which we only dream
* To combine and force our collective strength, talents, initiatives
* To "re-educate" with honor and commitment
When under the weather, put on our red hat and a purple
scarf,look in a magic mirror and smile, smile, smile
until next we meet.
The Red Hat Society was inadvertently begun by Sue Ellen Cooper
of Fullerton, California when she and a few friends took
inspiration from a popular poem entitled Warning by Jenny
Joseph, which begins, "When I am an old woman...."
Since the poem mentions wearing a red hat and purple attire,
she and her friends formed a group which met on a regular
basis for tea wearing their red hats and purple
dresses in public.
When Sue Ellen began receiving inquiries from other women who
wanted to start their own chapters in the United
States and Canada, the theme was expanded.
