Club Functions

Every Toastmasters meeting needs various helpers to make the meeting totally effective. Each person in a role serves an important function.

REGULAR POSITIONS:

PledgeMaster: This person leads the Pledge of Allegiance and gives a Thought for the Day.

JokeMaster: This person presents a joke for the day. Speaker: These persons each present a prepared manual speech. The speeches may be on any topic, and address the objectives of the particular manual lesson. They also prepare their own introduction, which is read by the

Toastmaster of the Day: Toastmaster of the Day The Toastmaster is the master of ceremonies for the meeting and is in charge of the program. The Toastmaster contacts the speakers in advance and gets their speech titles, times, and manual lessons.

Table Topics Master: This person facilitates the Table Topics (impromptu speaking) session. He/she asks questions of members, who have 1-2 minutes to respond. Questions follow the theme of the day.

Evaluator: This person evaluates one of the speakers. Each speaker has lesson "objectives" for every speech. The evaluator will also evaluate props or handouts used. Evaluations are timed to be 2-3 minutes.

General Evaluator: The "General Evaluator" evaluates the meeting as a whole, in particular, the speech evaluators. The GE also notes if the meeting started and ended on time.

Grammarian: This person announces and listens for the Word of the Day, as well as both good and bad use of grammar.

Timer: This person is responsible for timing all speeches (usually 5-7 minutes each), Table Topics (1-2 min each), and Evaluations (2-3 min each). The timer operates our timing lights to aid whoever is speaking.

Ah Counter: This person counts all ahs, ums, ers, etc. as well as other filler words and reports on them. A "consciousness raising" exercise for all members, including the Ah Counter.

OPTIONAL POSITIONS:

Gesture Monitor: This person observes any gestures that the speaker makes with hands and/or body while speaking and notes both good and bad use of them to reinforce the use of meaningful gestures.

Vocal Monitor: This person watches for good and bad use of the voice, including aspects of vocal variety and any particularly good uses of "different" voices, such as changing the voice to represent different people.

FactMaster: This person listens to the substance of speeches and discussion, noting any inadvertent deviations from actual facts. Besides the positions for each meeting, the club enlists seven officer positions who serve in their roles for one year terms.

OFFICER ROLES:

President: Officer who serves as the chief executive officer of the club.

Vice President of Education: Officer who plans and schedules the educational program of the club.

Vice President of Membership: Officer in charge of member recruitment and retention functions.

Vice President of Public Relations: Officer in charge of the club's marketing and advertising functions.

Treasurer: Officer who plans and tracks the club budget and all income and expenditures.

Secretary: Officer who records meeting minutes and handles club correspondence.

Sergeant-at-Arms: Officer in charge of all club property and meeting setup.
