Alarmed by the apparent inroads of Communism and Fascism upon the American way of life during the 1930s, Viquesney produced this bronze plaque featuring The American's Creed quotation by William Tyler Page. Viquesney hoped that every school, library and courthouse in the nation would exhibit this plaque, but today it's one of the sculptor's rarest surviving pieces. It measures about 36 inches tall by 28 inches wide, and weighs over 150 pounds. The flag-draped center figure was also available as a separate statuette called The Spirit of the Flag, and the sailor figure (4th from the right, back row) is posed almost exactly like another Viquesney creation, The Spirit of the American Navy, designed as the companion piece to The Spirit of the American Doughboy.
