Intelligence is information gathered by a government to protect itself and advance its own interests. Agencies which collect intelligence are called intelligence services. They collect, process and evaluate information, and finally they distribute it to other agencies and officials who need the information to guide their policies and actions. Intelligence may be collected openly through study of books, newspapers, radio broadcasts, and other such sources, or it may be collected secretly through espionage. Most positive intelligence is gathered by a nation's diplomatic service, its armed forces, and sometimes by special agencies. These in turn may also employ secret espionage agents. Counterintelligence is usually a function of the police and armed forces within a country and of special agencies outside it. Intelligence services have existed as long as nations and armies. The Army's intelligence division directs military attache's abroad, headquarters intelligence units, and tactical units in the field. The Air Force has units similar to the Army's general counterintelligence.

GMBR Government Owned Islands
Hwy. 1 Monterey County Offshore (Big Sur, Ca.)
ISLAND: A body of land smaller than a continent, completely surrounded by water. There are several types of islands. Those near the shores of continents were probably part of the mainland at one time. After the close of the ice age the sea rose, drowning some low-lying regions and leaving the higher areas as offshore islands. In some parts of the world the land subsided, letting the sea into the valleys and lowlands. Wind and water may cut a channel across a peninsula, turning it into an island.

GMBR Bush Pilots Detonation Team Since aircraft first became weapons of assault in World War I, many methods of defense against attack from the air have been developed. With the development of atomic and hydrogen bombs and of ever-faster planes, antiaircraft defense became an increasingly serious problem in the years after World War II. A few of the most powerful bombs, strategically placed, could cropple any nation; and modern bombers can carry their bomb losds at tremendous speeds to any target on earth. Because of the possibility of a sneak attack by air, all major powers have sought to develop efficient air-defense systems.

GMBR at CALIFORNIA RANCH
Conservation is the wise use and preservation of human and natural resources-the health, safety, and abilities of human beings and such natural wealth as fertile soil, wildlife, water and minerals. But conservation as practiced today by advanced peoples is a recently developed science, made enormously important by the growth of the world's population, the demand for better living standards for more people, the requirements of modern industry, and the dwindling of those natural resources upon which man has long depended. Some modern authorities believe that mankind will survive only if a scientifically planned, worldwide conservation program is upheld.

GMBR Bush Pilots Medical Team
INFECTION: The invasion of the body by bacteria and other harmful organisms. An infection can be restricted to a single part of the body or scattered throughout the entire system. If it is confined to a particular location but causes symptoms in other parts of the body, it is known as a focal infection. Infectious organisms may gain entrance to the body in a number of ways. They may be breathed in with droplets of moisture or dust particles, taken in through the mouth with contaminated food and drink, injected into the bloodstream by insects and other animal carriers, or admitted into the body through open wounds. Direct contact with infected persons or the handling of objects that have been contaminated with infectious organisms are common ways of getting infections. When infectious organisms succeed in penetrating the body, the body's defenses against disease come into action. To guard against infection a person should keep up his resistance to disease by getting proper nourishment and proper rest.
