 AP Spanish Literature

. Advanced Placement Spanish Literature Syllabus
2006-2007 Franklin High School

Mrs. Vega
Course Description:
The AP Spanish Literature course is intended to be the equivalent of a third-year
college Introduction to Latin American or Peninsular Literature course, covering
selected works from the literature of Spain and Spanish America. Because
students read and analyze literature orally and in writing in Spanish, the
language proficiency reached by the end of the AP course is generally
equivalent to that of college students who have completed a fifth or sixth semester of Spanish in composition, conversation, and grammar as well.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the year, every student will be able to:
1) understand a lecture in Spanish and participate actively in discussions on literary topics in Spanish.
2) do a close reading of literary texts of all genres in Spanish
3) analyze critically the form and content of literary works (including poetry)
orally and in writing using appropriate terminology
4) have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Spanish speaking world and its many cultures.
The Examination:
The Advanced Placement Spanish Literature Examination consists of two parts.
Section I contains multiple choice questions that test reading comprehension and literary analysis of passages.
Section II consists of three essay questions that
test literary interpretation and analysis in addition to skill in writing critical
expository prose in Spanish.
All students enrolled in this class must take the A. P. exam.
Texts: Abriendo Puertas: Antología de literatura en español, Tomo I,
Nextext, McDougal Little, United States, Pub., 2003
Abriendo Puertas: Antología de literatura en español, Tomo II,
Nextext, McDougal Little, United States, Pub., 2003
*Additional readings and films will supplement the course when
appropriate.

Participation and Attendance
Active classroom participation is essential to this class. A variety of activities such as directed questioning, small group discussions/ presentations, etc. will be
provided to help you prepare for the A.P. Exam. BE AWARE… you cannot receive 7 points for participation and classwork if you ARE NOT IN CLASS. Each student will be expected to come to class with all of her/his books and ready to work. Frequent absences (more than three absences each semester would be considered excessive) or coming unprepared to class will not only affect your grade in a negative manner but will prevent you from practicing Spanish on a daily basis.>
Daily Work
In addition to homework, there will be a variety of activities that will be done in class. Not all activities are graded; however, you should always be prepared to hand in your work. All assignments/activities should be written neatly in pen. NO CREDIT will be given for an assignment handed in late. If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to inquire about what you missed. You may then turn in the missed assignment the following day.
Oral Presentations
Each student presents at least one oral (not read) report each quarter. Topics and due dates will be announced during the semester. I will inform you if a written report is to accompany the oral report. Information regarding projects and their due dates will be given during the semester.
Writing Samples and Compositions
There will be ample opportunities for students to practice writing in Spanish (review sheets on each literary work read, timed essays, book reports, analysis on
a specific literary topic, etc). Writing samples will be graded on form and content.
Tests and Quizzes
Tests will always be announced at least three days in advance. Occasionally, I will give unannounced quizzes. There are no make-ups for missed quizzes; If you are absent the day that a test is given, you will be expected to take the test the day you return. It will be YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to contact me about making up the exam. You may only make up one test per semester without penalty. If
you should miss any other tests, you will be permitted to make up the test then day you return; however, your score will be dropped by 5%.
Practice AP exams, will be given at the end of the first semester and during the second semester.
