DOMESTIC AND WILD ANIMALS ARE A FAMILIAR SIGHT ON THE COUNTY'S ROADS AND FREEWAYS. WHEN MOTORISTS SEE ONE THAT HAS BEEN HIT OR IS LIKELY TO BE INJURED, CALL 911 AND DESCRIBE WHERE IT WAS OR IN WHAT DIRECTION IT WAS HEADING. THE CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL WORKS WITH ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS TO SAFELY STOP TRAFFIC FOR RESCUES. THEY HAVE EVEN STOPPED TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE 8 NEAR OLD TOWN SO THAT A FAMILY OF DUCKS COULD SAFELY CROSS.

SWERVING TO AVOID AN ANIMAL CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND TRYING TO CORRAL OR RESCUE A LOOSE ANIMAL IS BEST LEFT TO THE EXPERTS. FRIGHTENED OR INJURED ANIMALS MAY BITE. IF AN INJURED ANIMAL IS ON THE ROAD, DRIVERS COULD PULL OVER AND WAIT NEARBY UNTIL ANIMAL CONTROL PERSONNEL ARRIVE. IF POSSIBLE, FLARES COULD BE PUT AROUND AN INJURED ANIMAL SO THEY ARE NOT HIT AGAIN.

CALLERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE SAN DIEGO DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SERVICES (619) 236-4250 REGARDING LOOSE AND INJURED ANIMALS. THE PHONE NUMBER FOR DEAD ANIMAL PICKUP IS 888-299-9905.

ALWAYS KEEP A COLLAR AND LEASH ON YOUR PET WHEN IN A VEHICLE. IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY, YOUR PET WILL BE ABLE TO BE SAFELY RESTRAINED. PETS SHOULD NOT BE IN THE FRONT SEAT WHERE THEY CAN BE INJURED OR KILLED WHEN AN AIR BAG DEPLOYS.
