Come now with me, my love
Come outside with me
Now it's getting dark
Come so we can lay
Our backs on Savannah grass
Gaze into the distant sky, with
Faces looking longingly upwards...
We shall count each and every star
Let's look up straight at the moon
Let's compare figures
Let's work it out, my dear
Our little arithmetic
Is not to measure how far-sighted we are
Nor is it to know how diligent we grow
At the post;
It's to know how we attend and how we respond
To Nature's sight, to her songs, to her signs;
How resonant our heartbeats can become
At the post
What if songs turn lullaby?
Come outside with me, my love
It's getting dark
Come so we can lay
Our backs on natural grass, heads
Raised heavenward
No disquieting thoughts to mar our
Harmonious minds
Aided by the dropping dew.
Thank you, my love.
Thank you for coming out
With me tonight. No prying eye
Lest they call out "Scandal! Scandal!"
Let's start...Do I count?
Or would you start?
We are here tonight to see
How many stars we shall count.
Now we count.
Endlessly we count
Might it not take eternity, really
To keep on counting the uncountable?
