![]() Battle of The Sexes Introduction: The Battle of The Sexes is a daily occurrence in our society, I am going to research this topic and present both sides of the topic, from the conservative to the radical viewpoints. Many of you will not like what is presented; nevertheless it is a controversial and interesting topic and will be presented in a pro and con format. At which time you are free to draw your own conclusions. If you would like to have your comments added feel free to e-mail them to me.
The Differences: Have you ever heard a seemingly normal woman saying something like, "I don't know what I do to turn men off. I seem to push them away. Maybe I'm too demanding, or not demanding enough. Men are so confusing." And it could be that very same day that you hear a seemingly normal man, unrelated to the first woman, complaining: ‘I don't get women. I must be doing something wrong. Women are so hard to understand." When men and women get together, there are, in effect, two worlds—his and hers. They have different values, priorities, and habits. They play by different rules. Scientists have come to accept that a few fundamental differences between men and women are biological. It turns out that men's and women's brains, for example, are not only different, but the way we use them differs too. Women have larger connections and more frequent interaction between their brain's left and right hemispheres. This accounts for women's ability to have better verbal skills and intuition. Men, on the other hand, have greater brain hemisphere separation, which explains their skills for abstract reasoning and visual-spatial intelligence. Poet Robert Bly describes women's brains as a "superhighway" of connection while men’s brains connections are compared to a "little crookedly country road.'" Different habits of men and women are explained by different roles in the process of evolution. Although life conditions have changed, both men and women tend to follow their biological programs. Men tend to retain a firm sense of direction – they need to trace the game, catch it, and find the way home, while women have a better peripheral vision that helps them to see what’s happening around the house, to spot an approaching danger, to notice changes in the children’s behavior and appearance. Men’s brains are programmed to hunting, which explains their narrow range of vision, while women’s brains are able to decipher a wider range of information. When entering a room, men look for exits, estimating a possible threat, and ways of escape, while women pay attention to the guests’ faces to find out who they are and how they feel. Men are able to sort out information and archive it in their head. Women tend to ‘rewind’ the information over and over again. The only way to stop thinking of the problems is to talk it over. When a woman shares her problems with a man, she is not looking for solutions – she needs someone to listen to her. Men prefer strident noises, hard handshakes, and red color. They are better at solving technical problems. Women have a sharper ear; they use more words while talking, and are better at completing tasks independently. Based on these biologically explained differences, some psychological distinctions between men and women can be established:
All the above gets even more confusing, if we take into account that 15 to 20% of men happen to have a female type of brains, and about 10% of women have a male type of brains, which means that some percentage of men and women, no matter how small it seems, are partially programmed to the behavior and way of thinking of the opposite gender.
10 Things Women Do Better Than Men 1) Women drive better than men. Well this reverses a social myth - that women are bad drivers. Carnegie Mellon University researchers found after analyzing a lot of traffic data in 2007 that men are 77% more likely to die in a car accident than women, keeping the miles driven constant. So next time when your husband asks you to hand over the car keys, just give him this article. 2) Women remember appearances better than men. Some would say, “Why not? Don't women pay all their attention to appearances?” Well, say what you may, but only a loser complains about somebody for being better than him! Terrence Horgan, research fellow in psychology at Ohio State University, and her co-researchers found in a study that women are more accurate in describing appearances after seeing people once. The study was published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. 3) Women cooperate better than men. We can see this everywhere, but still if you want a citation, here it is. A study by Rolf Kuemmerli and other researchers at dinburgh and Lausanne universities indicated that women cooperate better than men. In the research, based on games layed by 100 Swiss students, women cooperated with others almost twice as much as men did. 4) Women eat better than men. This is probably not so obvious, for rarely do we notice gender differences in eating habits. A survey involving 14000 Americans, conducted bUniversity of Minnesota, revealed that men are more likely to eat frozen pizza and meat, whereas women are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables. 5) Women perform better than men in timed tests. So if time is precious, women are better at preserving it than men. A study by Vanderbilt University researchers in 2006 found that women core better in timed intelligence tests than men. The study, published in the May-June issue of the journal Intelligence, didn't find much difference in un-timed tests, which meant women had a quicker mind. 6) Women perceive their relationships better than men. Talk about relationships and most men will frown. Now you know why - they know so little about their relationships! A Hebrew University of Jerusalem study, after surveying 97 couples in the United States, found that women are more perceptive than men in describing their relationships. The study, published in Science Daily, reported that women were much more accurate in describing the perception of their partners than men. 7) Women communicate better than men. This is now scientifically proven and acknowledged. Louann Brizendine, neuro-pyschiatrist at the University of California at San Francisco, found in a study that women can process 20000 words a day compared to men's 7000 words (Louann Brizendine,The Female Brain, Morgan Road Books). This difference, as per Brizendine's study, is more biological than social, which starts as early as the fetal stage. 8) Women learn better than men. That is why girls get better grades in school on an average than boys in many parts of the world. Dr Simone Kruger of Edge Hill University, UK, found in her research based on remote learners that women learners were more successful in sharing ideas and experiences with each other, and hence learnt more efficiently than men. 9) Women invest better than men. You don't believe it, do you? We all know fewer women invest in stocks than men do, but the few women who invest in shares do better than their male counterparts. A study by the National Association of Investors Corporation (NAIC) for the University of California found that women earn on an average 1.4% more than men in their share portfolios. 10) Women cope with stress better than men. A study at the University of California, Los Angeles, published in the July 2000 issue of Psychological Review, found some biological and behavioral differences in the ways men and women cope with stress. It found that women tend to seek contact with others and social support when they are under stress, which is a psychologically much better way of coping with stress than the “fight-or-flight” approach of men.
