The Red Hat Poem

Warning by Jenny Joseph

When I Am An Old Woman I shall wear purple with a red hat Which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired, And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick the flowers in other people's gardens And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats and things in boxes. But now we have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We will have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

Kazooing Safety Rules

KAZOOING

Never stick the kazoo up your nose. Do not inhale through the kazoo. In subfreezing temperatures, use ONLY plastic model kazoos, since a metal kazoo could become permanently affixed to your tongue. Use protective covering to keep your kazoo free of purse/pocket lint or belly button fuzz.

My greatest fear in life is to learn there is no "PMS" and that this is my REAL personality!

Wow! I've gotta get a dress like this one.

This is our sacred pledge! Place your hand over your heart and repeat after me......

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO MY FELLOW RED HATTERS, FOR AFTER ALL, WHAT REALLY MATTERS, IS HAVING FUN WITH WRINKLED FRIENDS, IN PURPLE CLOTHES WITH DOUBLE CHINS, HAVE GOOD TIMES AND REMEMBER WHEN, WE CATERED TO OUR KIDS AND MEN, NOW, THAT CALLS FOR A NIP OF GIN!--AMEN!

From birth to eighteen a girl needs good parents. From eighteen to thirty-five she needs good looks. From thirty-five to fifty-five a woman needs personality; and from fifty-five on the old lady needs cash. - Kathleen Norris

The Story of Red and Purple

Red is one of the few colors -- along with white and black - found in every language known to humnankind. Red is the color of fire, the color of blood, the color of life.

Red can be found in the oldest artwork on Earth, the Stone Age cave paintings of Southern France. Cave dwellers mined red ochre and crushed it to create a pigment that has not lost its lustre in 30,000 years.

Derived from the ancient Sanskrit word for blood, "rhudira," red was believed to prevent evil and disease. Warriors painted their axes red. Scottish farmers tied red string around the necks of their oxen. Ancient Egyptians immersed themselves in vats of red.

In Asia, red is the color of luck and prosperity. Chinese bridges were red. Hindu women put red bindis on their foreheads. Red is the first color noticed by babies, the favorite color of children, and most popular color on national flags.

Red is the color of passion and love. A zest for life. A craving for excess. It is no myth that red is exciting. Just looking at red will increase the blood pressure, stimulate adrenaline and speed up the pulse. See what happens when you think in "red."

THE STORY OF PURPLE

Purple is the color of riches and royalty. Once rarer than silver and more valuable than gold, its origins go back to early civilizations in the Middle East. Ancient Phoenicians extracted tiny drops of dye from the purpura shellfish. Cloth colored in this was worth twenty times its weight in gold.

Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt wore purple amethysts. She rigged her ships with purple sails. The Roman Emperor Nero decreed the color was his own. Anyone else found wearing it was put to death.

Bluish purpura was the color of the holy thread in the Jewish prayer shawl. Reddish purpura was the color of early Christian clerics. Mohammed of Islam, however, rejected purple as a symbol of decadence and shame.

The artificial dye, called Mauve, was discovered in 1862 by an English chemist searching for a cure for malaria. Queen Victoria fell in love with the pale purple color, sparking a 19th century fashion craze called Mauve Madness.

Purple means mystery and intrigue. It means quick wit, creative thinking. Thanks to purple, we have words on this page, because the Phoenicians invented the alphabet and carried it to distant lands along with their precious cargo of purple.
