A Message From Division C Governor, Barbara Barrientos DTM

“Through out the Years”

Through out my years as Toastmaster, people have asked me, “Why did you join Toastmasters? Isn’t it just a speaking club?” I answer: “For me, Toastmasters has been all about speaking effectively, so others listen, and listening effectively, so to help others grow in communication skill and leadership confidence.

My journey with Toastmasters has been exciting, enriching and most of all fun. I joined Toastmasters, because I did not know how to give an attention –holding presentation to a group of people.

When I visited my first Toastmasters club meeting and watched how members stood up in front giving organized, focused, interesting speeches, I knew Toastmasters was for me. I noticed the speakers knew the makeup of their audience. I learned communication tips from the useful feedback members shared, to help each other grow in delivery power. Everyone was advancing in learning about what it takes to make a presentation that every person in the room can understand and can grasp the main point. Throughout the meeting, people were clapping and cheering and having a good time. The magic for me was in the FUN taking place in the pursuit of personal development goals.

I learned how to respect each audience, so they cared about listening to me. I learned to stand in front of a group and share what I had carefully prepared. I also learned to speak impromptu, spontaneously, without preparation. My skills were increasing, along with my fellow club members. In this supportive environment, I grew in my ability to communicate, and this in turn strengthened my confidence in exercising leadership. Positive changes were happening to me, beyond what I expected.

Leadership duties rotate at each meeting. One day you may be on the agenda to evaluate a speech. Perhaps you may serve as a timer who monitors the length of presentations, or you may serve as a grammarian who notes how words are used, or maybe you will serve as the “Ah” counter who notes the use of filler words which are vocalized pauses. Each duty / responsibility develops a unique skill. Toastmaster’s leaves no stone unturned, when it comes to providing members with a variety of professional experiences.

How do members get such polished, proficient training, especially when everyone is a volunteer? Herein lies the magic. As each member grows and his or her skill advances, they give it back by passing it forward and the accomplishment cycle starts all over again.

Toastmasters International is the largest, and the leading communication and leadership training organization in the world. Dr. Ralph Smeedly started Toastmasters, 1924, in Santa Ana Orange County, California. Toastmasters impressive world headquarters is now located in Santa Margarita, California.

I am proud to be part of an organization that educates, communicates, and teaches leadership skills with instant feedback from my peers. I am committed to giving back to others the knowledge and skills that others helped me to gain. I have served in a variety of offices at the local club level. Following club administration responsibilities, it has been my privilege to serve as Area Governor, Asst. Division Governor and now I am proudly serving as Division C Governor of Founders District. Our slogan is: "Leadership is Investing in Yourself”, and giving it back is the biggest reward.

My name is Barbara Barrientos, proud mother of three lovely daughters, married to a most generous, giving man, Ray Barrientos, who has spent the 38 years of our marriage in support of my desire to learn and grow.

If I were to thank all the people in Toastmasters who have befriended me, and helped me to stretch and move forward with my personal and professional life, I wouldn’t know where to begin. I continue to expand, develop and unfurl. Thank you, dear Toastmasters. Whatever it takes to help others exceed beyond their dreams, you have done for me. Together, we will shape ourselves, shape our world. YES WE CAN!

You see, Toastmasters is not just a speaking club, it is so much more!

The Best Time to Plant a Tree

When I was just a little boy, my father and I planted a tree in the woods in back of our home. “It’s a walnut tree,” he told me. To me, it looked like no more than a twig sticking out of the ground. My father, a woodworker by hobby, spoke lovingly about the dark beauty of walnut wood. He told me how the tree would grow, slowly but certainly, and how one day it would spread its branches out to create some lovely shade. He told me how he might someday use the wood from this very tree to make a fine piece of furniture.

Seeing the world through little boy eyes, I ran to the walnut tree each day for weeks and weeks to see how much it had grown. I stood next to it to see if it was as tall as me, I measured it with a stick, and I compared it to the other trees. But, try as I might, I could not see that it was growing at all. I was so disappointed in the lack of quick and obvious growth, that I stopped checking for a long time.

The following spring, my father and I again went walking in the woods. We found the walnut tree that we had planted. It looked…different. Maybe it was a little thicker, maybe it stood slightly taller. It was hard to say how exactly, but clearly some growth had occurred.

Seasons came and went, and he and I returned to check on the walnut tree on many occasions. The tree was very special. It was our tree, and we would always recall the day we had planted it. Now when I stood near the tree, it was far taller than me. I always tried to judge how much it had changed since our last visit. Clearly, both the tree and I were slowly growing bigger and stronger with the passage of time

I learned many things from my father. He taught me patience, foresight, and that real growth takes time. It was true in the case of that beautiful walnut tree, and it has been true in my own life. The walnut tree grew from an insignificant sapling to a deeply rooted giant that now dominates that corner of the woods. It is tall, stately, and strong, and has spread it branches to a remarkable length. It outlived my father, and it will surely outlive me.

If I could have but one wish in my life, it would be to continue to grow like that walnut tree. To reach for the heavens, and cast a little shade on those around me. One way that I continue my own slow but certain growth is by renewing my membership in Toastmasters each year. It allows me to grow in thoughts, words, and deeds. Remember these words of sage advice, “The best time to plant a tree was 50 years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is today.” Plant your trees, my friends, and grow.

EXPANDING THE REWARDS OF HAVING FUN

What's more rewarding and fun than bringing a new prospect to your club - and then seeing your prospect join up? Here's what: Having them tell you your club doesn't meet at the best time or day for them, and so you help them start a whole new club! This can and does happen, as it did dozens of times last year in Founders District, and we're looking to expand that trend! Here's how:
1. Just call me (714-315-9765) and we can visualize how we can make it happen.
2. Pass your prospect's name and contact info to me, and I'll start the process.
3. Next comes a "demo meeting" at a convenient time; our "demo team" will leap into action and make it happen!
4. The team will include mentors and coaches to bring the new club up to charter strength and help it to a healthy, sustainable status.

Helping it all to happen is an outstanding team to back you up: our District Lt Gov of Marketing, Gregg Van Citters, Founders' New Clubs Coordinator, Shawna Daigle,Founders' Sponsor and Mentor Coordinator, Elisa Roddy, plus a heap of excited helpers, of which I'm just one, but with all that help,I'm excited, too, and I'm hot to bring Toastmasters' benefits to as many new folks as possible. Aren't you, too?

Okay, now what if you have an idea for a whole new club at your workplace, church, a nearby company, or other location?Again, no problem: Just pass the main contact's name to me.We'll outline the benefits of a club in the new location, and plan a demo meeting and steps toward a great, new chartering.

If you'd like to share in the fun and rewards of chartering a new club, just email me at gerflash@socal.rr.com, or call me at 714-315-9765. Let's talk!

Count Down To Success

Let me start by saying how thankful I am for all of your efforts that led to Area C3 becoming a Distinguished Area this past year, and in the process helped Founders District become Number 1 in Region 2 and 19th in the World.

What a truly remarkable accomplishment.

As we begin this new Toastmasters year, we will be facing some tough challenges as we continue to build on the strong foundation that the previous officers have laid down for us. That is our goal, to continue the excellence that those before us have displayed, while continuing our primary mission as a Toastmasters Club.

Now, what is the primary mission of a Toastmasters Club?

The mission of a Toastmasters Club is to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every member has the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster self-confidence and personal growth.

Being a Toastmaster means more than simply making a commitment to self-development. Everyone who joins a Toastmasters Club is making a commitment to the Club, to its members, and to the organization as a whole.

Those in the Aerospace industry know that a Critical part of any mission is the countdown.

That is why I have chosen Countdown To Success as our Area Theme. The countdown starts at 10 and continues down till the end result has been accomplished. Now for our Clubs to obtain Distinguished status we have to complete a set number of goals out of 10 possible. I would like to see all of our clubs obtain all 10 goals and become a Presidents Distinguished Area

We can achieve this by using the Countdown To Success as we focus on our Primary Mission as a Toastmasters Club. Your Club Presidents will be explaining the Countdown To Success in more detail.

I look forward to meeting with all of you and sharing in your success

Vision

Polish the leader in you and let it shine!

Mission – The mission for my area is to encourage toastmaster members to step out of their comfort zones one step at a time.

I joined TM to learn more effective presentation skills. Shortly thereafter, I was asked to serve as a Club Secretary. I thought I was just helping out my club. Then I served as an officer in other roles including club president. Now, I am serving as an Area Governor.Wow!

Since I joined TM, I have received wonderful supportive comments like: most improved and you can do it - more than in any other place. This support has transformed my life. In the friendly environment that TM provides, I have stepped out of my comfort zone to fulfill roles in communication and leadership. And, I am looking forward to stepping out even more.

I would like to encourage each and every one of the members in Area C4 to step forward in leadership and communication roles. I see each one of us in a great journey and having fun too!

Area C5, Chris Gregory DTM Area Governor

Chris Gregory, DTM Toastmasters International Founders District 2007-2008 Area C-5 Governor

Toastmasters is all about improving yourself. Having fun along the way is what makes it an amazing journey. I remember that in 2003 I was wrestled to the ground by one of my co-workers who wanted me to join our newly forming company club. I finally agreed and became a charter member of 6991 Imagesetters. Our Sponsor was Ann Hastings and our Mentor was Rodger Cota (Ann is now our Immediate Past International Director and Roger is the new District One Governor). These two people impacted the lives of every one of us -- it was like magic. For me, I felt as if they took a scared rabbit out of the hat and presto made me feel that I could speak with poise and confidence. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of my journey.

As we were finishing our first meeting Ann tripped me and Rodger held my arm behind my back and they asked “Would you like to be the Vice-President of Public Relations?”. Now I knew they were nuts – WHO ME AN OFFICER! Panicked and fearing for my life I said “YES!”.

This proved to be one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made. It was then that I stared to learn about what leadership is all about. Then I became the 2004-2005 District One Area E-3 Governor. When asked what I thought would be a good theme I thought “What is Toastmasters All About?” and then it came to me…. E3 stands for Encourage, Educate and Empower.

With an amazing team and a heck of a lot of fun I have to say -- Thank you to all the support and congratulations as we achieved President’s Distinguished Area.

This year I have the opportunity to be the 2007-2008 Founders District C-5 Area Governor and I promise to do my best to achieve President’s Distinguished again. But with this I need a team, with this I need to prove myself to each and every one of you. With this I ask – please help the team Speak, Learn and Achieve all our goals. And have fun doing it.

As for the Area C-5 theme – that’s easy. C5 is part of the Division C – Home of the Champions. C5 plans to lead the way and it starts with Courage and Commitment and then through Consistency, Communication and Comradeship we will Speak, Lead and Achieve our goals.
