When Twilight Shadows Deepen

When twilight shadows deepen, and the study hour draws nigh,
When shades of night are falling, and the evening breezes sigh,
'Tis then we love to gather 'neath the pale moon's silv'ry spell,
And lift up hearts and voices in the songs we love so well.

Sons of old Massachusetts, devoted daughters too;
Bay State, old Bay State, we'll give our best to you.
This our Alma Mater, we'll cherish for all time,
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Massachusetts, yours and mine!

F. D. Griggs, Class of 1913

50th Reunion Banquet Invocation

by Rev. Sherwood "Woody" Carver, '53

Creator God, we turn to you as the Source-the Fountain- of all that makes life workable and worthwhile. Out of the abundance of your nurturing power, you feed us with all we need to sustain our lives.

In the nostalgia of this gathering, images gather of those through whom your spirit has worked to enrich our lives. Here we recall the households - the families - who brought us into the world and, when we were youth, sent us forth into a wider world of exploration and growth.

Here we pass before the recall of our long-term memories that substantial array of professors and academics who awakened in us an awareness of the subjects they had disciplined themselves to comprehend.

Here we honor with deepening respect the legacy of those administrators who carried out their tasks with fidelity and who had the perserverance to survive amongst the diversity of opinions and realities that make up the labyrinth of life.

Here we affirm the privilege that has been ours to make our life journey in a nation that has allowed us the freedom to be the unique persons you, O God, have made us to be.

Gathered here, with classmates who have known the joys and the trials of life, we together recall, with bittersweet memory, those who have completed their life journeys, but whose touch is still felt among us. Bless them, O Lord, and those who walked with them in the days they were among us.

And, indeed, O Lord, we would pray for those who are our families - that they may live within the assurance of your love -and ours - for such provides us with the ongoing faith to live our lives with trust.

In your Holy Name, we pray. Amen.

Special Note: Janine Sicks '93, Assistant Director, Events and Programs, UMass-Amherst Alumni Relations Office, did a terrific job in arranging all of our various activities, and in coordinating all the committees and other alumni personnel who worked on our 50th Reunion. She deserves a great deal of credit for a job well done, and we want her to know that we all appreciate her endeavors on our behalf! Assisting her very ably was Susanne Paquette. Thanks to both of you!
