About Toastmasters

The first meeting of what is now Toastmasters International was conducted in a Santa Ana YMCA building on October 22, 1924, by a small group of people led by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley. Since its humble origins, Toastmasters International has empowered more than 4 million people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. While communication isn't optional for anyone and leadership isn't always natural, Toastmasters shows that both can be “learned by doing” through its emphasis on speeches and evaluations. The organization now stands as a worldwide leader in communication and leadership training, with a diverse international membership of over 250,000 people. The Toastmasters program focuses on improving speaking and leadership skills. This self-pace program teaches techniques for effective public speaking delivery, controlling nerves, organizing material, and fielding questions and answers. Members build confidence through hands-on experience and practice.

A Toastmaster's Promise
- To attend Club meetings regularly;
- To prepare all of my speeches to the best of my ability, basing them on projects in the Communication and Leadership Program manual or the Advanced Communication and Leadership Program manuals;
- To prepare for and fulfill meeting assignments;
- To provide fellow members with helpful, constructive evaluations;
- To help the Club maintain the positive, friendly environment necessary for all members to learn and grow;
- To serve my Club as an officer when called upon to do so;
- To treat my fellow Club members and our guests with respect and courtesy;
- To bring guests to Club meetings so they can see the benefits Toastmasters membership offers;
- To adhere to the guidelines and rules for all Toastmasters educational and recognition programs;
- To maintain honest and highly ethical standards during the conduct of all Toasmasters activities.
