Biographical Information Grupo Folklórico del Pueblo (GFDP)—The Peoples’ Folk Group, is a non-profit folk arts organization that was originally founded in 1996 as the Ballet Folklórico de Pueblo (BFDP) by Velma, Sara, and Jimmy Newmoon Roybal. Since its inception the GFDP has evolved and changed to better meet the needs of the community as a non-profit. Throughout those changes we have remained committed to the preservation of our community’s folk culture. Currently our Dance Instructors are Celina Martinez,Sara Roybal & Kareen Lopez. Our Students are taught the History of dance by our Lead Instructor, Velma Roybal. Our Administrative Director is Paulette Anaya. We are able to serve students aging from pre-school, to collegiate and beyond. The GFDP aims to include other forms of folk dance from around the world the future but we are currently focused on Mexican dance, and the complete academic experience of folklore. As a part of our focus we have added more depth to our curriculum with an historical background and practical skill component. Not only must our students learn dances, but they must also learn the history and context of the dance that they will be performing. Additionally, we teach our students to make certain costume components so that they can obtain a more complete exposure to Mexican folklore. Our goal is to create a complete and practical academic experience for our students. Our students learn teamwork and leadership through regular performances in various situations ranging from fully equipped theaters to street festivals. Last year alone our students executed more than 30 performances in the community. We also send our students to conferences and competitions, where they have earned some honors, so that they can measure their skills against other dancers, and find motivation to become better at their craft. We contribute to the flavor of our community by participating in parades, pageants and festivals where our students and our company have been recognized for excellence. We are proud to have become an integral part of the cultural character of Pueblo and Southern Colorado and we will continue creating excellent students and presentations for years to come. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Vision Statement Our vision is to become a folk arts organization that will help define our community and achieve prominence in the nation. We will be a uniting leader in folk arts that will broker information and talent to the community at large. We will strive to become a Mecca for top folk talent that will provide jobs to enhance our genre of art. We will accomplish this with the following three facets. 1. A school of folk arts taught by qualified Instructors. Our Instructors will teach the history and language of our genre of art in conjunction with responsibility and physical awareness. This school shall cultivate accuracy, professionalism, and excellence in our students. 2. A Grupo Juvenil (juvenile group), that provides a sense of community and leadership for our students beyond the curriculum of our school of folk arts. This group shall be our ambassador to the community by performing for our community events at low or no cost. 3. A professional adult performing company that will incorporate teatro (theatre), music and dance. This group will attract top talent while maintaining a culturally creative environment. This group will provide a venue of artistic expression and performance for our instructors. It shall also provide role models for our younger students and serve as an ultimate goal. |
