Since 1979, I've done business consulting to help clients increase sales, reduce expenses, and create more profits. Consulting can be very helpful, but it's often cost-prohibitive for many individuals and small businesses. It can even be too much for the budgets of managers of large business departments. As a result, many are forced to go without needed help as they start new projects, new careers, new businesses, and new campaigns. That why I was so excited to discover what Ben Franklin had invented back in 1727 to help himself and the other members to get ahead, what I brought back to Denver with the first Franklin Circle here in 1996. Since then I've intensively studied how adults learn through my own independent study, graduate classes on adult education at Regis University, and through the practical work I've done leading literally hundreds of Franklin Circles and similar adult learning groups. More and more I believe the best help I can provide is connecting business owners, entrepreneurs, and creative managers by helping them start a self-directed Franklin Circle. | Join or Form a New Franklin Circle
Each Franklin Circle is independent and self-governing, there are no experts telling others what to do. Learning is accomplished through mutual exploration rather than an instructor filling the blank slate of the students head. Each Franklin Circle has in common: 1) People with similar learning objectives; 2) Group guidelines based roughly on Franklin’s Four Agreements and his unique two-part meeting format; and 3) Celebration of Benjamin Franklin’s birthday each January 17. We seek to inform rather than reform. No endorsement of any issue or candidate is ever made by a Franklin Circle, but members are encouraged to do so independently. The result? IDEA Café ... is a start-up workshop for people starting a new project, a business, or a new career. Since 1993, the Denver IDEA Cafe has been a great places to connect with like-minded learners, and attending can be the first step toward joining or forming a new Franklin Circle. I personally lead a model IDEA Cafe Meetup each Friday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Denver, Colorado. (See link to the left.) The meeting is free and open to all. IDEA Creative Thinking Model To create means to bring something new into being. Here are the four-steps for turning your inspiration into effective action: I= Inspiration D= Develop Alternatives E= Evaluate the Alternatives A= Act
Inspiration (or Identify the Target for you right-brained people)comes from what you are doing now. Developing Alternatives can be done in many ways, at the IDEA Cafe we share experience and brainstorm. There is no shortage of people who will help you evaluate your idea. Beware of the idea-killers. In our free market economy, the market place renders the final decision. But before spending a significant amount of time or money, it's a good practice to bounce your thinking off a good C.P.A. or public accountant. A good accountant won't tell you whether you have a good idea or not, be he or she will help you see the financial implications and let you know if you need to see a lawyer.
