Welcome to the John H. Collins Post # 24 website

Our Post is now located at Veterans Memorial Building at the corner of Atwater and Seymour Avenues in Derby, Connecticut.... The Post is the oldest Veterans Organization in Derby and has been a leader in Veterans Affairs not only in our town, but the Naugatuck Valley as well....

The Post was formed and chartered in 1919 and was named after John H. Collins, a hometown lad who was the first Derby fatal casualty of World War One....

The Post originally occupied the building at the corner of Atwater and Seymour Avenues which is now the Veterans Memorial.... The Post moved to a location at 230 Caroline Street in 1945....

The Post was the birthplace of the Connecticut Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps.... The Hurricanes started out as a parade unit and graduated to field competition.... They have won National recognition and are one of the premier corps on the Drum Corps scene....

Today, the John H. Collins Post #24 leads the way in promoting American Legion programs in the Naugatuck Valley.... We sponsor a team in Legion Baseball, we send our young men and women to Boys State and Girls State to learn the political process of our government and we provide outstanding service to today's returning veterans through our Veterans Service Office in the Derby City Hall which we man jointly with the Veterans of Foreign Wars....

All of these programs require one very important element.... Volunteers.... We have a membership comprised of veterans from WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan.... These men and women give of their time, talents and treasure to assist their comrades in arms....

Why not join us and put your knowledge to work.... Look for more information on how you can join the American Legion on the membership page....

Department of Connecticut Nixes Post Minutes on Internet

In an email sent from the Department of Connecticut Adjutant's Office, it was noted that our Post is in violation of "Rules of Order" by posting the minutes of the monthly meetings on the Post website....

Rather than make an issue of it all, we opted to take the minutes off the Post website....

Therefore, if any member wants a copy of the Meeting Minutes of this Post, he can email the Post Adjutant and a copy will be emailed to you....

Post Adjutant email address -

Personally, we thought that it was a good idea(posting the minutes)in that it kept those who did not make a meeting in the "loop"....

New Plaques for Witek Park

At the March meeting of the Board of Governors for the Veterans Memorial Building, a plan to replace the stolen plaques at Witek Park was unveiled.

Instead of using metal plaques, the committee decided to use black granite and all the inscriptions will be laser etched into the plaques.

Funding will be solicited from the Veteran Units within the Derby Area.

If additional monies are raised over the cost of the plaques, lighting will be put in place to keep the area illuminated.

More infornmation will be forthcoming within the next month.

The Committee would like to have a "rededication" ceremony on August 4, 2012.

August 3, 1944 was the date Pfc Frank P. Witek was killed in action on Guam.

Post members took active roles in the Memorial Day events sponsored by Bradley School and St Marys/St Michaels School on Thursday and Friday prior to the holiday weekend....

Many members helped place flags on Veterans graves at the Oak Cliff, St Michaels and Mt St Peters Cemeteries....

Make sure you check this page often for news about the Post and its' activities....

Next meeting will be September 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.
