| What's happening..... Welcome to the Essex 5K for Play website sponsored by Essex Elementary School PTO and the 5K run/walk committee. This site is designed to provide information on our first annual 5K event which will raise funds for new playgrounds to be built at Essex Elementary School. The run/walk will be held on May 5th beginning at 9:00am from the school grounds. It will travel left out of the property and up into the quaint village of Ivoryton and circle back to the school. In addition to the 5K run/walk we will also hold a children's run in our back field. Don't just come for the 5K - come for the day! Once the race is completed, families and participants are encouraged to stay and enjoy the music, some lunch and the company. All three better than the other. Please help support the new playground. It's important for the kids and the community - besides, Play is Good. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

How can I help? It's going to take a small army to run a successful event. Won't you please consider donating some of your time that day - work the whole day or even an hour or two. We'll need many hands and caring hearts to realize a successful race. We currently need volunteers for registration, children's run, race marshals, food booth, bake sale table, clothing booth. We are seeking volunteers from student groups to help with the various activities. This is a great opportunity for any student group to earn community service hours. The possibilities are wide open: face painting, balloon art, handmade jewelry booth, a craft booth, spin art, or whatever you'd like to host. Please email Wendy Josephs or Jackie Russo-Boudinot via the links on this page with any questions or availability. Thank you - in advance

About our playground today: We have two large playscapes on our school property. They are enjoyed by our students during and after school as well as residents of our immediate community and visitors to our town. They have served us well over the years, but it has been determined that they no longer meet current safety codes. This includes unsafe materials contained within the wood sections of our structures, which are also beginning to splinter. The school will undergo a massive renovation project beginning in the spring of 2007. This renovation does not include upgrades to the playscapes. Therefore, in conjunction with the school upgrade project, the EES PTO is planning the design and installation of of two new playscapes on the existing playground sites. |
About the new playground: The proposed plan for the ehnanced structures will provide our children with age-appropriate activities that comply with and exceed the American Disibilities Act and criteria for a safe and accessible playground. The vision is to create a design with greater accessibility that can be enjoyed by 5 to 12 year old children of all abilities. The intent is to create a design that reflects the community's unique heritage while incorporating environmentally friendly materials wherever possible and appropriate. Installation is currently planned for Spring 2008 to coincide with the completion of the school's building renovation. Our fundraising goal is set at $200,000! We are a wonderful community with visitors from all over the world. One day our children will be the adults that will welcome them. For now, we want them to play and laugh on safe equipment, while learning to build those skills that will help them to care for their community when they are older. This is more than a structure we are building - it's a future.
