Special Meeting Notice, June 25, 2009 The next SLC Board Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 25th. It will be held at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, 153 Cook Hill Road, Windsor, CT. Todd Mervosh will lead a tour of the facility starting at 6:00 PM. After the tour we will have our regular board meeting in their conference room. Refreshments are to be arranged. Members of the Conservancy are invited to attend the tour and meeting if they wish. The work of the Experiment Station includes research on insects, diseases, weeds, molds, soil management and agriculture. The program is of vital interest to Conservancy members, home gardeners and environmentalists. The Conservancy thanks, Todd for arranging this program Bluebird Nest Box Workshop, February 7, 2009
Help bring back the bluebirds and enjoy educational fun for the whole family by participating in the 4th annual Bluebird Nest Box Workshop. This is the 4th year the workshop has been sponsored by Suffield Garden Club, Friends of the Farm at Hilltop and Suffield Land Conservancy. At the workshop, you will build a nest box and learn about installing and monitoring it; learn about the eastern bluebird and watch a fascinating video of what goes on inside a nest box. The Bluebird Nest Box Workshop will be held on Sat., Feb. 7, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at First Church of Christ, Congregational, 81 High Street, Suffield. Donations are requested. Extra nest box kits as well as assembled nest boxes will be available for a donation. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The Noble & Cooley Center for Historic Preservation in collaboration with the Suffield Land Conservancy and the Suffield Historical Society will re-create a 19th century, small scale ice harvest on Sunday, February 8, 2009 between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. The event will be held at the Noble & Cooley Pond at 42 Water Street in Granville, Massachusetts. The Noble & Cooley Center will be open for tours and refreshments will be served. Here's your chance to use an ice saw, handle a pike pole and slam a breaker bar! The event is free but donations will be gratefully accepted. Water Street is located 1/2 mile south of the junction of Routes 57 and 189 (Granville Center) off of route 189. ![]() Overlook Ridge Signage Team
Posting team for the newly acquired Overlook Ridge property. SLC recently took ownership of this 42 +/- ac property located off of Spruce Street. Posting began in mid - November. Pictured deep in the woods are SLC President Mike Stanley and his wife Liz, along with newly appointed Land Steward, Victoria Spellman. This property is easily accessible. SLC property signs are posted on the street and entrance is through steel gate which leads into a large open field, currently used for agricultural purposes. There is a trail located at the back of the field that extends to the end of the property and would be excellent for hiking or cross country skiing. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Past Event Summary![]() 2006 Bird Walk
The 2006 Bird Walk was held on Saturday, May 6 at the Silver Creek Preserve. This preserve is a newly acquired open space associated with the subdivision being built between Longview and Hickory Streets. The walk was led by led by Art Sikes who conducts the Suffield portion of the annual Hartford Audubon Society Spring Bird Census. ![]() 2006 Wild Flower walk held at Sunrise Park
SLC Director, Marie Gauthier, with some of her 5th Grade students, Jack, Devon and Natalie, during the Wildflower Walk held at Sunrise Park on April 29th. On Saturday, February 4, after 5 unsuccessful years, ice was cut the old fashioned way from White's Pond at Sunrise Park. Dennis Picard presented an interesting history on ice harvesting in New England and demonstrated some of the many techniques used in harvesting ice.
