Ledyard VFW Post 4608 is the caretaker of the William Williams family cemetery on Town Farm Road.

HPIM1111webSix generations of the Williams family homesteaded in the Cider Hill section of Ledyard. Their farm was known as the Cider Hill Farm. Men of the Williams family, in addition to serving in the local Militia, fought in the King Philips War against the Indians, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. William Williams (?-1704), 1st generation, fought in King Philips War against the Indians in 1675 and 1676. William Williams (1668-1741), 2nd generation, was a member of the local Militia. William Williams (1708-1795), 3rd generation, was Chairman of the Groton Town Committee during the American Revolution. He was on the committee to raise money to pay the soldiers. HPIM1111webWilliam Williams (1741-1814), 4th generation, was a Lieutenant active in military and naval forces during the Revolutionary War. He was a Member of Captain John Morgan’s Company who marched upon the alarm on September 6, 1781 at Fort Griswold. Erastus Williams, (1795-1845), 5th generation served during the War of 1812. He was present at the bombardment of Stonington. The William’s house was built and occupied by six generations of William Williams for 120 years. The homestead was sold out of the family in 1848-1849. In Later years the homestead became a town home for the poor and needy. At that time the farm was known as the Town Farm, eventually the road bore the same name. The home is once again a private residence. The William Williams cemetery is located a short distance east of the original homestead.

Ledyard VFW Post 4608 yearly collects and donates items to Connecticut Veteran's Hospital patients.

Each year Ledyard VFW Post 4608 collects and donates items to the patients at the VA Hospitals in Connecticut. Throughout the year patients and hospital administration, make “wish lists” of what they need and desire. While Ledyard VFW makes their donation in December, contributions, both in material and monetary are accepted throughout the year. Monetary donations are used to buy items not donated.

The items donated are dispensed by the hospital on holidays and patient birthdays as well as at Christmas time through the hospital “Adopted Veterans”, “Secret Santa”, and general holiday gift giving programs.

Over the last eight years, Ledyard VFW, with the help of generous donations from the community, has donated an average of more than $600.00 per year. With your help, we can equal or exceed this amount in 2008.
