Is an unfailing love of country; loyalty to its institutions and ideals; eagerness to defend it against all enemies; undivided allegiance to the flag; and a desire to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and prosterity.

Commander's Call
VFW National Headquarters keeps reminding me that the population of new veterans is in the millions and growing by the day. Let us not forget that America’s finest have been fighting and sacrificing on behalf of the citizenry for the past ten years.
The answer I often receive from the modern day warrior goes something like “We have nothing in common with you old veterans”, or Uncle SAM has, is and will always treat me well and take care of my needs.
Dollars to Donuts, Your grandfathers, fathers and other relatives who served would be surprised by such an answer. They are going to tell you, “we have been there and done that, like you, we are comrades, we are patriots, and we love and want the best for our Country. We stand to support and help those serving and who have served”. Finally, some might even say, “Why are we different, the basic rule of war has never changed. Carry out your mission, defend your country, its’ ideals and way of life, kill the enemy before he kills you.”
The answer “I will always be taken care of”, might work in good times. However, that has not always been and may not always be. The conditions of our veterans hospitals and major military hospitals were recently headline news because of their under staffing and deteriorated conditions. Seek out the homeless vet and ask them how all of Uncle SAM’s help worked out for him.
To the system, while in uniform your are an asset; once you leave military service you are a debit and no matter where you have been, or what you have done, or how many medals you have, your status does not change.
What protects the veterans issues and what brings change is the political clout that can be brought to bear when the major Veterans’ organizations “stand to speak for those serving and who have served”. Many of the things you have and hope to get are or were the result of the political process. You need someone that can defend your interests. The major Veterans Organizations, and in particular the VFW, are that someone. Next time you are home, hug your grandfather and father, and the other Vets before you. YOU OWE THEM. They can say with authority “WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE AND YOUNG”.
Stand tall for those who served before you, with you and will come after you. You are America’s finest, you are elite. Join the Elite, Join the VFW. We want you, we need you, and the future veteran needs you. Only you can make the difference.
